Introduction

At the beginning of our social psychology class in semester 2, we were grouped into groups of 4 by our lecturer Mr. Shankar to assist us in completing our group assignments assignment. Among them is a video assignment which involves making a video related to 5 concepts. For this assignment, we are required to make a video based on any 5 concepts that we have learned in class and later produce a report about the video that we made. The objective of this assignment is to allow students to identify the connections of the various concepts in psychology and apply all these concepts taught in their everyday lives. We as a group made a video based on the following 5 concepts which are, impression management, attraction-physical attractiveness, motivation (extrinsic motivation), self-fulfilling prophecy and aggression.

Content and Script details of the Video Clip

Introduction:

Our video clip is about ‘The Joshua Show’. In this clip, Joshua’s assistant will help Joshua to give some tips and tricks on how to pick up girls.

Scene 1:

In the first scene, Joshua introduced himself as one of the influential man in the world of flirting. He was named in People’s 2015 Sexiest Man Alive and won 3 Consecutive People of the year award. Later then, the clip was carried on by his assistant, Alwin.

Scene 2:

In this scene, Alwin started off by explaining the first tip which is impression. Impression plays an important role as nowadays as girls love to judge a book by its cover. They are likely to be attracted to guys who gives a good first impression.

In the later part of this scene, 2 different ways of a guy asking a girl out is shown. The first way shows Joshua, a low confidence person who has a bad sense of fashion asking a girl out. He also couldn’t finish his sentence and therefore the girl rejected him due to a bad first impression that he gave her. In the second scene, it was shown that Joshua who is very confident, dresses nicely and a well build body asking a girl out. Without hesitation the girl agreed!

The concept used in this scene is impression management. Impression management is a goal-directed conscious or unconscious process in which people attempt to influence the perceptions of others about a person, object or event. Such as the way a guy dresses influences the decisions of a girl accepting.

Scene 3:

Going back to Alwin, he explained on the second tip which is physical attraction. He explained that due to the materialistic culture nowadays, money is all that matters.

In this scene, there are 2 different guys who wanted to ask a girl out. In the first part of the scene, the first guy, Ka Shing who has no money asked the girl out, the girl directly rejected him and said no without valuing his effort. Right after she rejected Ka Shing, Joshua came across. He gave a smug look to Ka Shing and after that, he threw some money in front the girl to show off that he has what the girl wanted. Without hesitation, the girl followed Joshua.

The concept used in this scene is the impact of physical attractiveness in attraction. Attractiveness affects all sorts of things, including how much money we earn the scene shows that Dinna is attracted to guy with a better physical attractiveness (money).

Scene 4:

After that, Alwin appears again revealing the 3rd tip that you must always believe in yourself. You should not panic even when your friends say you will fail.

In this scene, Joshua panicked before going on a date because his friend said he would fail. Due to that reason, Joshua’s date doesn’t go too well. They couldn’t initiate a conversation and the situation got so silent, the girl was started playing with her phone. Joshua felt really uncomfortable and he excused himself to go to the restroom. The girl spying an opportunity, took advantage of the situation and stole Joshua’s brand new phone.

The concept in use in this scene is self-fulfilling prophecy. Self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true, by the very terms of the prophecy itself, due to positive feedback between belief and behaviour. In this scene, Joshua believing that what his friend said might come true started to act weird during the date thus providing positive feedback that causes the prophecy to come true.

Scene 5:

Alwin continued on his fourth tip, motivation. He describes picking up a girl as a hard task, and lots of motivation is needed to complete the task.

In this short scene, Joshua is shown motivating himself in the toilet to not panic. He kept telling himself he could do this and he is going to get laid. He said things that could help him stay motivated even after the disastrous date.

The concept we used in this scene is extrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation drives people to do things for tangible rewards or pressures, rather than for the fun of it. In this scene Joshua uses this concept to motivate himself to do better on the date.

Scene 6:

Last but not least, Alwin gave his last tip on how to pick up a girl. He said ‘manners maketh man’. As guys, you should never be aggressive towards a girl, even if you are angry.

Continuing from the scene 5, when Joshua got back from toilet, he noticed the girl was gone. But, not only the girl was gone, also his phone. He chased after the girl and stopped the girl from running. Joshua was angry and scolded the girl with a loud voice on why she stole his phone. With a pity voice she said she needs some money for her mother in hospital and apologized to Joshua. Joshua not being aggressive forgave the girl and they both left happily.

Aggression is depicted in this scene when Joshua raised his voice against Dinna for stealing his phone.

Scene 7:

As Alwin was finishing the show, Joshua came back and finished Alwin’s sentence ‘That’s how you pick up girls.

Concepts

For our project, we used 5 concepts we learnt in Social Psychology subject in completing our short video clip. We used the concept of:

Impression Management - First Impression

First Impression is a term of impressions made instantaneously toward a person whom you have just met. As an example in our clip, based on a good first impression of a girl towards Joshua’s confident and his six packs, Joshua succeeds to ask the girl out.

Attraction - Physical Attractiveness

Physical attractiveness is the degree to which a person's physical features are attractive. As an example in the clip, the first guy, Ka Shing asked the girl for a date without anything to offer except for happiness, the girl who didn’t even look at him rejected. Then Joshua and just showed her with money, without a second glance she walked away with him.

Self-fulfilling prophecy

Self-fulfilling prophecy is when a person unknowingly causes a prediction to come true, due to the simple fact that he or she expects it to come true. In other words, an expectation about a subject can affect our behaviour toward that subject, which causes the expectation to be realized. For instance, before Joshua went for a date, he panicked because his friend kept telling him he will fail. He became really nervous and failed the date. The date became awkward for both of them.

Motivation – Extrinsic Motivation

Extrinsic motivation drives people to do things for tangible rewards or pressures, rather than for the fun of it. In the video getting laid is an extrinsic motivation for Joshua to perform better on the date.

Aggression

Aggression refers to a range of behaviours that can result in both physical and psychological harm to oneself, others or objects in the environment. This type of social interaction centres on harming another person, either physically or mentally either through verbally or non-verbally. As example, based on our clip, when Joshua knew the girl stole his brand new phone, he got angry and scolded the girl. But in the end of the scene, Joshua forgave the girl left happ

Conclusion

Through this assignment, we improve our understanding on the subject of social psychology and how it affects our everyday lives. Furthermore, we also improved our video making and editing skills as we had to do more research on how to edit and make a proper video as none of us in the group had much experience on making or editing videos. Besides that, we also learnt the importance of teamwork as we had to work together in order of us to complete this assignment. In conclusion, it was a nice experience completing this assignment as it was quite fun but we also had difficulties in the process of completing this assignment but we worked hard to overcome any of the difficulties that we faced.
