Ways to recognize a scam:

“Hello, we have been trying toreach you. This call is officially afinal notice from the IRS, InternalRevenue Service. The reason ofthis call is to inform you that IRSis filing a lawsuit against you.

Personal Information Requested by Email >The IRS does notusually send an email asking for personal information, if youreceive an email, you are probably not talking with areal IRS agent. If you receive an email that says youneed to update your IRS e-file immediately, forwardit to the IRS at [email protected].

Call you to demand immediatepayment.

The IRS will first mail you abill before any calls are made.

Promises of a Higher Refund > Walkaway, and quickly. This tax preparer isup to no good, they can not promise youa higher tax refund. They are using tricksthat is best not to be associated with.

Receive a Phone Call Requiring Only a Certain MethodPayment > Hang up, the IRS will not call and ask for onlya certain method of payment. They will also never askfor debit card information over the phone.

If you know you owe taxes orthink you might owe, call theIRS at 800-829-1040 to talkabout payment options. Youalso may be able to set up apayment plan online at IRS.gov.

If phone scammers target you, also contact the Federal TradeCommission at FTC.gov. Use their “FTC Complaint Assistant” toreport the scam. Please add "IRS Telephone Scam" to thecomments of your complaint.
