Survey: Are you a risk-taker?

Arne Méresse, Adem Karadag, Metin Kutlu & Ibrahim Ortaoren2MAR6Phase 1:Executive summaryWe estimated that there would be different responses knowing that not every student dares everything. We usually chose to ask general questions, which are about alcohol, going out, gambling and other amongst students. But not for question 11, which we divided into a & b. 11a directed to the girls and 11b for the boys. If we look at the reactions we conclude that the opinions are divided. This shows that not everyone is risking the same things.

IntroductionThis report will look at:

- How often, where, when and how someone would minimise risks by taking .- We wanted to measure the differences between girls and boys.

FindingsOur first question was ‘what is your gender’ because we wanted to make a separation between boys and girls. We were glad that we made this question because it helped us to make a conclusion if one of the genders was more willing to take more risks. Based on the answers we saw that 4 girl’s and 14 boys answered our survey.

We wanted to know what people think about

when they hear the word ‘risk’. First we wanted to know which word it was and after this we wanted to know if girls think at another word than boys. The results showed us that the majority of boys and girls think about the word ‘uncertainty’.

Page 4: Proof of personal progress

The next question was about trusting your driver when he is drunk. We wanted to know if people would take a ride with a driver that has been drinking. The majority is willing to travel with the drunk driver and hope that nothing would happen. Then we looked at the different genders and there we saw that the girls were separated in 2 groups. One half would trust the drunken driver and the other half would call a taxi. The majority of the guys would trust their friend.

For the next question we wanted to know if people would drive a car even if they wouldn’t have a driver’s license. As expected, 72,2% would rather be 30 minutes to late than be driving without having a driver’s license. 75% of the girls and boys answered no to this question.

Our fifth question was to see which gender takes the most risks. We asked if they would go to a country where there is a civil war. Surprisingly, 75% of the girls wouldn’t cancel their flight because the hotel is an area where there is not any sign of violence. But the majority of the group has chosen to cancel the flight.

We live in a period where cell phones are important so we had a question in our survey if people who pick up the phone while driving. We saw that 61,1% per cent would pick up the phone. If we look at the girls, we see that 75% would pick up the phone and only 57,1% of the boys would pick up the phone.

Page 5: Proof of personal progress

Our next question is about taking risks involving school. We asked this question because we wanted to know if people were willing to take risks on their exams. The majority would study 50% for each exam and do the both of exams on one day. After this result we looked at if the boys were more risky and the girls but we saw that 50% of the boys would guarantee one of their exam and do the other one in August. With the girls the percentage of taking risks were higher. At least 75% chose for doing both exams on one day.

Question number 8 was also about taking risks involving school. We wanted to know if people are willing to take the risk of missing an important lesson. So we asked if they would go out with their girlfriend or boyfriend the night before. The majority of the class were willing to take the risk.

The following question is all about investments. We saw that all of the girls chose the answer B that is a normal profit with a normal risk level. Also the majority of the boys chose this answer. At least 77,8% of the people voted for this, only 1 boy chose rating C.

Page 6: Proof of personal progress

When we thought about taking risks at school, we immediately wanted to ask people when they made their tasks. We can see that 50% begins 3 days before the deadline and only 3 boys would begin on the night before the deadline.

In the 11th question we made a separation between boys and girls. We made 2 questions. The first question was for the girls where we wanted to know if they would walk alone to home at 4 o’clock in the night. 75% of the girls would take that risk. The second question was to the boys where we asked if they would let their girlfriend walk alone to home at 4 o’clock in the night. We can immediately see that 76,6% of the boys wouldn’t agree on the fact that their girlfriend walks back to home alone.

Our last question about driving is question number 12. We wanted to know if people in our class would risk a speeding ticket in order to be on time. When we look at the results

Page 7: Proof of personal progress

we see that 83,3% would drive faster than the legal speed limit. When we make another separation we see that 33,3% would even drive 140 km/u, which were answered by boys.

The following question was about a TV game show. We wanted to know if students in our class would take the risk losing money. We see that people still take a risk of 50% and lose €5000. 3 boys and 1 girl chose answers A and have a chance of 75% winning and win €1000. The majority chose answer B and there is one boy that chose answer D and that is having a chance of 5% and win €100000.

The 14th question is about paying for a train ticket. We all know that in Belgium travelling with train is very popular. So we were curious how many times they didn’t pay for a train ticket. The fine of not paying for a train ticket is very high so not paying for it is a huge risk. We saw in the results that 33,3% never took a train without paying for a ticket. 44,4% did take a train 1 to 3 times without paying. And 11,1% did take the train without paying for more than 6 times. We saw that boys take more the train without paying.

Page 8: Proof of personal progress

Our last question in our survey is about cheating on a test. Cheating on a test is very risky because the consequences are huge. You can even been expelled from school. The results on this question were that 55,6% never cheated on a test and that 44,4% did ones cheated on a test. We also saw that all girls didn’t cheating ones on a whole test.

Conclusion:We thought it was very hard to make a conclusion for this survey. First of all, we are with 13 boys and 5 girls in this class but if you look at the answers of the first question you can see that a girl accidently clicked on the wrong answer.Secondly, when you survey 18 people, that is never enough. But that’s what we had to work with so we did it.As you can see, the answers on the survey are divided. As expected, boys do take more risks than girls. What surprised us are the answers on question 11. Most of the girls would walk home alone but their boyfriends wouldn’t let them go alone, because they don’t want any harm to happen to them.We have some risk-takers in our class and we have some people who like to play it safe. But there is not really anyone who stands out above all the rest.

Phase 2: Appendix 11. Question 8: lesson -> Class2. We would make 2 surveys, one for men, the other one for women, but with the same

questions. That way it would be much easier to compare the answers of men and women.

3. Question 5 can be dropped/changed/replaced; Because the company who sold you the ticket will cancel the flight and the authorities wouldn’t let you go out there. I’m sure they would eliminate this risk.

4. Question 15 – Have you ever cheated on a test? Just rephrasing the question will give significantly different outcome

We would add the following question(s)

How old are you? may be interesting to see if people take more risks as they get older, the age would definitely weigh up on making decisions.

What’s your education? People who take lesser risks may choose an education which leads to a less risky job.

https://www.ted.com/talks/caleb_harper_this_computer_will_grow_your_food_in_the_future#t-847537

Caleb Harper wants to change the food system by connecting farmers with technology. In the beginning of his presentation he begins with an apple. He asked the question of: How old is this apple? Everybody was curious. When Caleb revealed that the average apple is 11 months in the grocery, the audience was shocked. He said that the food industry needs a platform to solve this problem. He suggests that we should implement technology in the process of growing fruit and vegetables. He has developed a computer program and a device that keeps an eye on the fruit and vegetables. This program controls the humidity, the temperature and the water. The device can be placed anywhere you like. This device with the unique program solves the problem that fruit and vegetables can be produced everywhere and that people get fresh food. But it causes another problem. If everybody gets the opportunity to produce its own fruit and vegetable does that not hurt the farmer? I think that the concept of this device and program is good but not refined.

https://www.ted.com/talks/michael_pritchard_invents_a_water_filter

This TED presentation is about a new product Lifesaver. Lifesaver is a filter that sterilise water. Michael Pritchard is the inventor of this new product. His presentation was very good. He explained the problem with filthy water. He told the audience what the effects were and how many children die each 5 minutes. He grabbed the attention of the audience because nobody wants that children die. During his presentation he tested his product. He brought water from the rivers nearby the building and he also added junk to it. The audience gave a reaction that the water was very dirty by saying ‘uhhhh’. After mixing all the dirt into the water, he poor the water in the filter. The water that came out the bottle was very clear and sterile. The audience was shocked and applauded Michael. To end his presentation he eventually drunk the water that came out of the filter. This shows that he is confidence about his product. It was a sublime presentation by Michael. He grabbed the attention of the audience, he had a good body language and he even demonstrated this product. The only problem with this product is: what are we going to with the filter when they lose their effectiveness to sterilise the water? Is it recyclable?

https://www.ted.com/talks/jennifer_kahn_gene_editing_can_now_change_an_entire_species_forever

I think that the concept of changing the gene in species is good but we have to watch out fro people with bad intentions. Jennifer Kahn told in her presentation that we could eliminate malaria by changing the genes of the fly that caries the malaria. We could also do this with the flies that carry the Zika virus. It is a great idea but everybody that understands science can do this. The scientists about the whole world should hold o conference about this subject. They must discuss what is allowed and which problems they want to solve. The example that Jennifer Kahn gave was very shocking; a scientist can just wipe out a whole race of fish. Her presentation was very good. She explained everything and she spoke fluently. The only thing that I didn’t like was that she kept her papers in her hand. It gave a picture that she wasn’t prepared.

2 Original creative English activities

- In the Easter vacation my two best friends and me went to London. We took the train to London and made a reservation at the Ibis hotel for a weekend, from Friday to Sunday. We visited a lot of places and we had a lot of fun. We continually spoke English to improve our English. London is a busy but beautiful city. On our first day we visited The Tower of London, Big Ben, London Eye and Buckingham Palace. In the evening we went to my old friend Max. He studies at the European Business School London. The second day we went shopping in London and visited Trafalgar Square and Regent’s Park. It was a fantastic city trip that I never will forget.

- On our last day we visited two museums. First we went to the British museum. They told us that it is one of the oldest museums in the world. It was very interesting to see the different galleries. The collection is very beautiful and includes books, coins and historical art. The second museum we had visited was the National Gallery. The museum was nearby Trafalgar Square. In this museum they display painting from different centuries. Beginning from the 13th century to the early 20th century. It was a educative day, the next time I am going to visit more museums in London.

Improve your knowledge of English

In the second semester I read a book of Ha-Joon Chang, Economics: The User’s Guide. He guides people in the world of the economy. It is a very interesting book that everybody should read. He tells in his book about myths and why they are myths. He gives his own vision about the economy and the different theories. It is book that reads fluently. For the class RZL we were given the task to read this book. I decided to read the original book in English so that I could develop my English.

Final feedback report

My English has been improved during the second semester. I have a feeling that I can speak more fluently and my vocabulary is also better. But I am not satisfied with my personal progress in general it could be better. I still make some little grammatical mistakes. In general I found the lessons very good. I had a lot of opportunities to speak and express myself. I also have read a book to improve my English. I think that my presentations could be better. I have to practice more on my presentation skills. Mrs Verheyden is one of the best teachers that I know. She gives feedback and tells you how to improve. She supported me during the whole year; my English really improved this year. She gave everybody the opportunity to speak and give his or her opinion. I have one remark on the English lessons. I think it is better when everybody knows on which day he or she should give his or her presentation. The task of making a vodcast when you’re absent is a great idea. I have not achieved what I wanted to achieve. I have a long way to go. I should practise more and read more English books. Compared with the first semester I can talk more fluently and I make less writing mistakes.
