Introduction In this assignment, we are required to write a report for 3 of the subjects which is Measurement I, Construction Technology, and Building Materials. Our class site visit was held on 26 th June 2015 which is located at The Andes, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. This site visit was organised by our Measurement lecturer, Ms Ang Fuey Lin. We are divided into two groups which we will go to the site at different time. We can either choose to go by our own or follow the bus that organized by our lecturer. Each one of us are required to buy a safety helmet to ensure us to be safe at the site.

IntroductionIn this assignment, we are required to write a report for 3 of the subjects

which is Measurement I, Construction Technology, and Building Materials. Our

class site visit was held on 26th June 2015 which is located at The Andes, Bukit

Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. This site visit was organised by our Measurement lecturer,

Ms Ang Fuey Lin. We are divided into two groups which we will go to the site

at different time. We can either choose to go by our own or follow the bus that

organized by our lecturer. Each one of us are required to buy a safety helmet to

ensure us to be safe at the site.

Content/Technical ObservationWe arrived at the construction site at 10am. When we arrived at the site,

we saw many construction materials at the site and we can know the

construction team of this project from the information board.

When we went into the site, James Siow, the project manager briefed us

about some information of the construction site. There are 2 block in the site,

which is categorised as block A and block B. For block A, they are planning to

finish it in August while for block B, they are planning to finish it in October

this year.

The below pictures shows what we had saw in the construction site.

The information board was placed in front of A power crane machine was found in the

the site site used for lifting heavy things and

transporting them to other places

Construction Technology ITypes of foundation used in site:

• Piled foundation: Piled foundations consist of a number of piles connected by a ring of concrete called a ground beam. This is similar to a strip foundation but not as wide. It is usually used with multi storey buildings or buildings along the sea shove or river bed. It transmits load through weak & unstable soil conditions.

Reason why choose piled foundation for the site

Based on this project, it is going to build a condominium which consists of

many stories. Due to this situation, piled foundation is the most suitable

foundation to use because it transmit the buildings loads to the foundations and

the ground soil layers.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Piled Foundation

Advantages DisadvantagesCan be placed deep into soil Requires heavy equipment for

handling and driving

Can transmit heavy loads Poor drainage qualities

Helps to prevent any shifting/collapse Expensive

The work is neat and clean. The supervision of work at the site can be reduced to a minimum. The storage space required is very much less.

Advance planning is required for handling and driving.

Piles of any size, length and shape can be made in advance and used at the site. As a result, the progress of the work will be rapid.

Driven piles are not suitable in soils of poor drainage qualities. If the driving of piles is not properly phased and arranged, there is every possibility of heaving of the soil or the lifting of the driven piles during the driving of a new pile.

Bored Pile

Bored pile is another type of reinforced concrete pile. Bored pile is used to

support tall buildings or massive industrial complexes, which require

foundations that can bear the load of thousands of tons, most probably in

unstable or difficult soil conditions. The method of drilling bored pile is

different from RC Square pile or spun pile, which is using driving method, the

piling machine to be used will be different too. Bored piling works required

specialist bored piling contractor to follow up instead of hiring general piling

contractor.

Objectives

- To enable us to have a better understanding of construction method and

construction technology as compare to what we have learn from lecture.

- To acquire first-hand information on construction site activities.

- To learn about site organisation and the importance of site safety.

- To enable us to witness and explore the different types of building

materials being used in a building project.

- The importance of time in relation to the project completion period.

- To learn how to communicate and work together with the construction

members.

Building Materials

The grade of reinforced concrete:

The grade of reinforced concrete used for the construction of the building is

Grade 35 reinforced concrete.

The advantages of using Grade 35 concrete are it is cheaper than other concrete,

more common used in construction site, better resistance to fire and long service

life with low maintenance cost. The disadvantages of using Grade 35 concrete

are low compressive strength as compared to other concrete and it will easily

cracks under service load.

The grade of reinforced concrete used for the construction of the building also

has Grade 45 reinforced concrete.

The advantages of using Grade 45 concrete are the size of the structure can be

reduced and therefore the amount of concrete required is consequently reduced,

it can save a lot of cost too. Besides, it can be extended life cycles and it is

relatively high compressive strength. The disadvantages of using Grade 45

concrete are the surface of the concrete is very hard. Other than that, it is also

more expensive than other concrete.

Conclusion

This is my first visit to a construction site. During the visit, I had acquired

valuable experience and knowledge with regards to construction activities on

site. The experience I got from the site visit is valuable because seeing the

actual construction work being done at the site is something we cannot

visualised from lecture.

From the site visit, I had learned how steel bars in beam and column is

fixed, how formwork is constructed and supported and also seen installed bored

pile, but unfortunately I was not able to see how the bored pile is actually

constructed. I also learned about the importance of site safety so as to prevent

fatal accident from being happening at the construction site.

Other than that, I have also learned that in a construction team consists of

the architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and a contractor. The team member

must work hand in hand to ensure the project is completed on time.

Finally, I am very thankful to Ms Ang, Ms Azrina, and Ms Aishah who

had arranged the site visit successfully and all the students learned a valuable

lesson about construction activities at the site.
