INTRODUCTIONWastes may be defined as any substance which constitute a scrap material or other unwanted surplus substance arising from the application of any process. – EPA, 1990

Wastes may be of 3 types:

1. Solid Wastes

2. Liquid Wastes

3. Gaseous Wastes

INTRODUCTIONSolid Wastes consist of polythene, paper, steel, aluminum, copper, cardboard materials, sludge etc.

Liquid wastes consist of slurry, biomedical wastes, urine, human wastes, sewage water, toxic wastes etc.

Gaseous wastes consist of airborne emissions and effluents that may contain particulate matter, fumes, smoke, vapor etc. releasing from industries.

INTRODUCTIONBSCIC elaborates as Bangladesh Small & Cottage Industries Corporation.

BSCIC was established in 1957.

Its sole purpose is to promote the development of small, medium and cottage industries (SMICs) in the manufacturing sector through the provision of advisory services, fiscal and financial assistance, market facilities.

INTRODUCTIONBSCIC, Mymensingh was established on 1st September, 1968 in Maskanda, central Mymensingh.

It had an area of 10.81 acres.

It currently occupies 9.69 acres consisting of 51 industries of different types.

OBJECTIVES To assess the types and amount of wastes that is

generated in the study area. To determine the relationship between waste

generation and other variables. To assess the present waste management practices in

the study area. To assess the environment impact of the generated

wastes. To develop a guideline for the betterment of waste

disposal as well as management system for the study area.

2. Design of Study:The steps in the study are: First of all, the study areas are selected. The important variables, directly related to the

objective of the study, are determined. Method of obtaining data is designed. Required study will be collected. The collected data will be analyzed and reported.

4. Study Period:Although some irrelevant information was collected prior to study, the main information for the study will be conducted from July 2013 to October 2013.

5. Instruments for Data Collection:An Interview schedule will be used in order to collect relevant information from the different industries.

The schedule is carefully designed keeping the objectives of the study in view.

For easy communication, the schedule is made in both Bengali/English form.

6. Collection of Data:Collection of data will be done through direct contact with industry representative on relevant industry site.

Manager and other stuffs will be interviewed for obtaining information regarding the product of the industry, waste generation.

Its management practices and pollution due to the waste.

In order to minimize the error in responses, questions will be asked in Bengali for easy access.

A Sample of Questionnaire is shown in next slide.
