Code of Ethics for Assistive Technologies

“The Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of

America (RESNA) is an interdisciplinary association of people with

an interest in disability and technology that looks to improve the

potential of people with disabilities through the use of technology by

promoting research, development, education, advocacy and provision

of technology and the people engaged in these activities.”

RESNA Code of Ethics

The RESNA Code of Ethics is a list of eight objectives that any

RESNA certified ATP has agreed to abide by when providing AT

services. The object of this code is to assure the person who is

receiving the AT services that they are working with a competent AT

provider who will provide AT services properly, honestly, and legally

while keeping private information confidentially.

The RESNA Code of Ethics are as follows:

1. Hold paramount the welfare of persons served professionally.

2. Practice only in their area(s) of competence and maintain high standards.

3. Maintain the confidentially of privileged information.

4. Engage in no conduct that constitute a conflict of interest or that adversely reflects

on the association.

5. Seek deserved and reasonable remuneration for services.

6. Inform and educate the public on rehabilitation and assistive technology and its

applications.

7. Issue public statements in an objective and truthful manner.

8. Comply with the laws and policies that guide professional practice.

Standards of Practice

9. Individual will verify consumer’s needs by using direct assessment or evaluation procedures

with the consumer.

10. Individuals shall assure that the consumer fully participates, and is fully informed.

11. Individuals shall consider future and emerging needs when developing intervention strategies

and fully inform the consumer needs.

12. Individuals shall avoid providing and implementing technology which expose the consumer

to unreasonable risks, and shall advise the consumer fully as possible about them.

13. Individuals shall fully inform consumers or their advocates about all relevant aspects,

including financial implications.

A RESNA-certified ATP will provide:

• a holistic approach to every individual’s unique situation, assessing eachperson’s needs and wants to determine the appropriate equipment toachieve that person’s goals.

• a commitment to continuing education and training in order to keep pacewith changing technology.

• a dedication to a strict Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics, assuringquality service and consumer protection.
