Week beginning- 23/01/17

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

I have planned to have the date of publication to be the 6/03/16.To start my magazine I need to look into the production process of Kerrang! Magazine In order to gain understanding of how to produce my music magazine and I need to manage the schedule.

I should choose when to release my magazine by seeing how long it takes Kerrang! To release there magazine and do research into the editorial teams in my magazine of inspiration in the magazine so I know what roles are needed.

Editorial and budgetary decision-I should research the budget needed in order to produce the magazine after the photos and interviews have been taken accounted for. Moreover, I need to research the important people involved on the production process.

I am planning to look at past issues of my magazine of inspiration, which is Kerrang! And see what sorts of models are used for pictures and what sort of backgrounds and locations people have and which props people use.

Content Acquisition- On Friday, I plan to look for people that I know who fit the genre of rock shown in my magazine of inspiration Keraang! Which I know and ask them whether they will model for my magazine and see if I can use any props at the school or if anyone has any props I can use and take the pictures.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

Sub-editing I will need to decide what content I should include in my magazine so I will have to decide if I am doing an interview or if my double page spread will have other things like information such as upcoming gigs

Page Layout-On the magazine I need to decide on this I will produce some hand drawn drafts and add colour to the drafts such as my house style which was shown in my survey and questionnaire these drafts will be of my contents, double page spread and front cover.

After I completed the hand drawn drafts I should start to do my front cover on Photoshop and select my favourite pictures that I have and edit them on Photoshop.

Proofreading- On my front cover I should add cover stories to my magazines and make sure the house style is consistent and see if there are any improvements that can be made to ensure high quality.

I should start completing my contents page using my hand drawn drafts to give me a rough idea at what it should look like.

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday

I need to include cover lines on the contents page such as pull quotes as it means the reader will want to carry on reading other pages so I need to add this to the contents page.

Proofreading-Now I need to finish off my contents page and go over any of my improvements to make sure the contents is good quality so it makes you want to read each page of the magazine.

I need to plan out questions for my double page spread interview or an article of the person who was featured on the front cover. Then I should ask the person the questions/ do research and start the page.

Proofreading- I should put pull quotes and images and have a consistent house style and make any improvements needed in my double page spread

File emailed to printer/ Pre-press- Lastly, I will need to proof read my work and check over the work to check that all the pages I have produced are to the highest quality possible and make sure it correct and aesthetically pleasing.

Production Process:

Date of publication –The date of publication is the date that you want the magazine to be released as a finished product to the general public. When you come up with a date you now have a schedule. A schedule is your plan on how you are going to go about the production process and when each of the process will occur.

Managing the schedule –this is an important part to be in order for magazine to be produced successfully then you must properly manage the schedule. Your schedule should be made in such a way that there are provisions for certain mishaps so that even when these mishaps occur, you can always meet the deadline.

Editorial and budgetary decision –The editorial decisions involve the magazine’s editorial team assembling and deciding what topics will be covered in the next issue of the magazine. Here, the editorial team basically talks about the various contents that will make up the magazine. After deciding which types of article ideas or topics, news stories, illustrations and photographs will be used in the magazine, the team now makes the budgetary decisions. Where they look at the money that is available to them and how it will be spent towards the production of the magazine.

Content Acquisition –There are two ways in writing the content. The first is through in-house staff writers and the second way is through external writers that are commissioned to write on topics that are specialist in nature where artwork and graphics are also worked on. At this stage too, a lot of research is made by journalists or reporters into the topics and events being covered. The research can be done via the use of the internet and news databases. Meetings are also arranged with interviewees.

Sub-editing – Sub editing means quality control. If the media organization is big enough to have a sub-editor, then he is going to be responsible for this job; if there is no sub-editor, then the editor does this job. The seps in this part are checking of the accuracy of all facts in the articles, making sure that words are properly spelled, making sure that grammar and punctuation are used correctly, making sure that all articles follow the house-style, working on the page layout.

Page Layout – in big publications, there is a special team responsible for page layouts called the layout staff. Their job is to typeset and layout the various pages that come together to make the magazine they use very powerful Desktop Publishing (DTP) programs such as InDesign or Pagemaker to get the job done.

Proofreading –The editorial department print out a hardcopy of the magazine for the purpose of reading through to find and correct any mistakes in it. It is easier to proofread a hardcopy than it is to proofread a softcopy. Any mistake that is spotted is quickly corrected on the DTP file. The editorial team keeps proofreading until every member is satisfied that all mistakes have been corrected.

File emailed to printer – The DTP file of the entire magazine is sent to the printer whose job will be to print the magazine. It is at this point the popular term ‘pre-press’ comes in. Pre-press is defined as the process of checking to make sure that you are sending all the fonts and images needed for the magazine with your file. Before the printing company prints the hundreds or thousands of copies requested by the publication, the company first prints a few copies and sends them to the publication’s editor for checking once again. This is called the printer’s proofs. If the editor and his team are satisfied with the printer’s proofs, then mass printing happens.

Distribution –The printing company package them neatly and send them to a warehouse. From the warehouse, the magazines are then distributed and then sold to the public.
