Private LabelsA private label brand (also called a reseller, store, house, or distributor brand) is a
brand that retailers and wholesalers develop.
• Research and development, advertising,
• Sales promotion, • Physical distribution, are
also much lower, so private labels can generate a higher profit margin.
Generics are unbranded,plainly packaged, less expensive versions of common
products such as spaghetti, paper towels, andcanned peaches.
Generic Drugs Generic drugs have become big business. By making knockoffs faster and in larger quantities,
Israel’s Teva has become the world’s biggest generic drugmaker, with revenue of $14 billion.
Although retailers get credit for the success of private
labels, the growing power of
store brandshas also benefited
from the weakening of
national brands.
