Production Commentary

UNIT 51 PAGE LAYOUT AND DESIGN

DESIGN PROGRAMMES• For creating the layout I used Photoshop, it was a

handy tool because I was able to edit photos so that they could fit with the text creating a great look, the tools I used were; quick selection tool, erase tool, gradient tool and type tool. I also did lots effects to the images to make it stand out more just like Gaussian blur and added saturation and contrast. Then I changed the style of the text giving it a shadow to make it look more 3D.

• I decided to use google documents which aloud easy access to and would never be deleted unless I will it, it is also an easy access to others for example when I got another person to check my draft they could easily comment on it if anything was wrong this made it easy to use and I was able to solve the problems quickly by looking at the mistakes. There seem to be not that much changes which meant I did well on my draft not needed to redo any of that work.

FORMATSI was thinking of creating a film magazine and writing a review on a film, I felt that there were too many to choose from and I’d wouldn’t be able to choose one but then suddenly I decided to get a game which made me change to gaming magazine and then a review on the game. So I had a look at a few magazine and the one I looked at was the one I analysed I thought it had a good look to it so I thought I’d try it out with the game I was reviewing. Then when I was finished I realised it worked well and decided to go with that and hope that it looks alright.

This was the magazine I was talking about and the text I got from I thought it looked good so I thought I’d try it with my own magazine.

CONVENTIONS & VISUAL LANGUAGE• I believe that the front cover gets the audiences intrigued to find out what the game is like before they play it because most

people who buy games haven’t played it but it because they check out the review they can decide whether or not to buy it, it is also a good thing if they read my review because its not got spoilers which is a good thing because it doesn’t ruin the game I only reviewed the gameplay itself which is what most audience want to know about and I’d speak for them also when I come to a game I want to know how it feels when playing the game.

• I decided to go for a easy look so its not to flashy and easy to read, I used the lines to give it a relevant to the front cover as there is a line on the poster cutting the title off as shown in the previous slide. To give it images to make it look too plain I added screenshots from the game which gave it more visual appeal this made the review more relevant because some of the screenshots referred into the text.

• When putting Guttenberg principle to use I considered it and all the text on the front cover should be well read so that it gives a better understanding to the audience so they can read more when they look inside. I used my own images for the side story because for a gaming magazine it is hard to use your own images as people cosplaying don’t look as good as the real thing which means it wouldn’t give the audience a feel or realism. So I used accessories which is the thing that people would want and gave it a good title to go with.

AUDIENCE• I’d say my target audience is simply whoever is interested in

buying the game I reviewed but to be specific 18 year old or over because the game has an age limit of 18+, the gender could be either male or female but there is scenes of nudity which could be more male audience other than that it would be towards the social class of C and below due to it being game and the royal family wouldn’t seem to read gaming magazines.

• I’d say that my magazine meets the audience needs because it is not got spoilers in the review which is a good thing when coming to a game because if you read a review that had a review the person would only get the game for the gameplay instead of story but if like my review just revolves around the gameplay it peeks their interest and makes them want to find out more about the game by getting it for the story and the gameplay. There is also nostalgic as you see the character back for another game and gets fans excited to read about the game that he is in.
