SCHEDULE

Diary- write what we remember about a fraction

View PowerPoint• Objective- To be able to add fractions by finding the least

common denominator, greatest common factor, and reducing. • How? • We will review what makes a fraction• View examples• Learn from power point• Practice as a class

Do problems on our own or in small groups

REVIEWA fraction has 3 parts to it

The ____________ is the top part which tells

you how much you actually have

The ______________ is the bottom half which

tells you how many pieces the whole is

divided into

The ___________, also known as fraction bar

means divided by

Numerator

EXAMPLE

⅓+⅙=½

Page 5: Ppt presentation #2 edu 210

HOW?

First- you must find the least common

denominator (LCD)• Make a list of the multiples of both

denominators• Ex.1/3 - 3,6,9,12,18 1/6- 6,12,18

• Then find the the lowest number that is in both lists. In this case it is the 6

• Now that we have found the LCD, we have to multiply one or both sides by a number to make them equal the LCD. Then add them together

Page 6: Ppt presentation #2 edu 210

STEP BY STEP

1/3 x 2= 2/6

2/6 + 1/6= 3/6

RECALL• To reduce a fraction to its simplest form, you must find the Greatest Common Factor.• Then divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF.

Page 8: Ppt presentation #2 edu 210

To find the greatest common factor,

we make a list of all the multiples of the

numerator and denominator.

3 (numerator) - 1,3

6 (denominator) – 1,2,3,6

Page 9: Ppt presentation #2 edu 210

Now that we have found 3 to be the GCF; we divide both the numerator and denominator by 3.

3/3=16/3=2

Final Answer

1/2
