Early Perceptions• I was very excited to get involved in the

Special Olympics program. I had never done anything like this before and it was a great experience!

Introduction to Setting• The School that I

was involved with was Apopka High School, and was held at Freedom High School.

Personal Demographics• I am Newly engaged and busy planning a wedding to the man

of my dreams. I love being outdoors and having fun. I work everyday with 17 Kindergarteners and I couldn’t ask for a better job, because I love kids so much!! Which is why I cannot wait to be a teacher.

Engagement Activities• The students have to do so many pre Olympics before going to the

final Special Olympics that is held at Disney.

• So my job was to help motivate the students to do the different track and field events.

• I also helped the students prepare for the events during practice and went with a group of students that were all involved in the same event and kept their time and record.

Engagement (cont’d)• I went to Apopka High School and a family friend of ours is one of the

teachers in the Special Education so that is how I got involved in the Special Olympics.

Participant Demographics• The participants are through Apopka High School and all have

attended the school or still do. But there is no age limit in the Special Olympics so the range of age was Early 20’s to mid 20’s.

• There was a total of 15 participants and the majority of the participants are of the African American race, and the rest of them are white and none Hispanic or other.

• The majority of the participants are Autistic, have a low IQ, and have a mental disability. There is one who is physically handicapped causing him to be in a wheelchair.

Reflection of my Experience• I have never worked with a group of disabled students and I was very

nervous, but also excited to do so. I feel that this has opened my heart to disabled people and has shown me that all they want is someone to love them, the way they love others.

• I really enjoyed getting to know the students as people and not just a label. I loved working one on one with them, helping them accomplish goals and watching them succeed.

• I made new friends that will always keep a special place in my heart and whom I have grown to have a greater understanding of and love for.

Reflection (cont’d)• I feel that working with these group of individuals I have gained a new

experiencing. Like I stated before I had never had the experience working with disabled students and I saw who they are as people not as a label. I saw their interests in music and their personal lives as well. They are just people who want you to take an interest in them and just want to know you are there for them and care for them. I will walk away always remember the impact these students had on me and take this to my future.
