Poverty cycle:Lack of recourses makes it difficult to escape.Education is key factor in development.Poor education leads to unemployment or low

levels of income.Good education provides access to good jobs

and enables career growth.Lack of education and money makes it

difficult to find a job or starting own business.May get minimum paying job with no

benefits- manual labour/ tee lady.

A total of 20 million people in SA live in poverty.

Poverty:State of being poor, having little or no money

& a few or no material possessions. They are often struggling to survive and are

faced with challenges:Unable to pay for basic needs.Hunger, having mo housing and living in poor

conditions.

Catch diseases easy because of malnutrition & unable to afford medical care.

Malnutrition:Condition in which the body does not get all

the necessary nutrition. Caused by not having enough to eat/ drink.

Lack of access to basic services- drinking water, sanitation, electricity.

Little or no access to education and skills training

Poverty causes socio-economic imbalances- poor people cannot fully take part in the economy- don’t have the money to buy goods and services.

Difficult to break the out of the poverty trap/ cycle.

When a parent is unemployed it carries through to the child- cannot get a good education or other opportunities and remains in poverty.

If a population grows to fast; it can lead to increased poverty because of more pressure is put on the limited resources.
