The Purge: Election Year The main generic convention we can see here is the movie title which is bold and stylised effectively along the top of the poster – this is done so it the poster can clearly advertise and inform the audience of what the film is called. The seconds most important convention that is used is the main image which consists of what looks to be the primary antagonists/villains of the film. We can see through the menacing clothing they wear and the use of lighting that these are villainous and as they are on the front of the main poster show they have an important role within in the movie; all of this intended to inform the audience. Also the use of eerie costume covering each person’s identity creates a sense nervousness as they don’t know who the antagonists really are.

The Girl in the PhotographsThe main generic convention we see in the poster is the movie title which is important as it is bold and clear to see and purely intended just so the audience is aware of its name. We can also see ‘Kal Penn’, the name of the starring actor, above it. This is done because it informs the audience of who portrays the main character and whether the film will likely be credited due to Kal Penn’s role in it. The main image is a medium close-up of the primary antagonist who appears mysterious, hiding one half of her face and appearing sinister – this is done to ensure the audience the film’s genre is horror and the person is the antagonistic villain. The quote “Brutal thriller that would make Wes Craven proud” is used to show support of the film to audiences and highlights the word ‘brutal thriller’ and ‘Wes Craven’, the first to inform of the film’s genre whilst the latter shows the likes of Craven, a man credited for bringing the slasher genre into mainstream cinema, would’ve approved of the film, persuading all those who are fans of films such as the Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street franchises to watch it.
