Political Economy Days (10/20/11) –Olga Diaz
Shane Tremblay
Speaker: Olga Diaz Topic: “Politics, Elections, and Voters: The Role
of Youth in Political Movements.”
Olga considers herself “young” in politics, as she is only 35, however, some people she works with are double her age.
Olga Diaz described “local” politics, or what happens on the local level of politics such as: -how much it costs to keep public services up and running –costs to open a public library –costs to fill up a pothole
Major Points of the Lecture Olga began by describing her experience in
politics, as she became the first Latina to become a member of the Escondido City Council
The power of young people in politics: Diaz described the need for more young and educated people in politics. She urged everyone to attend a city council meeting to see what its all about.
The idea of “young” in politics: Diaz explained that, even at age 35, she is one of the youngest (or the youngest) among her colleagues and therefore urges more people to enter the realm of politics.
Agree? / Disagree? I agree with the idea that more young people
should join politics. Most younger people today seem like they do
not care, or are not interested in politics when it is really important to be involved.
I disagree with the idea of “young” in politics. I don’t think it is fair for someone to be looked down upon simply because of their age. I understand the need for experience in the political environment, but one should not be shunned or put down due to one simple criteria.
