Energy is needed for people in their lives. We need it for industrial production, transport, warming or lighting.

The environment provides energy in the form of natural resources, for example wood, coal, petroleum or gas. We also process energy in windmills or watermills.

Constant increase of the demand for energy in different forms, environmental concerns and economy are setting new challenges. The development of technology has increased the number of power plants, whose task is to provide the electric supply.

In Poland, we are obliged to purchase electricity from renewable energy sources according to the Regulation Act of 19th December 2005.

• In 2010, we adopted an amendment to the Energy Law and the new regulation.• On November 26th, 2012 the Parliament held a hearing on the implementation of EU directive on renewable energy sources. • Since mid-2013, work on a new version of the Law on renewable energy sources has been underway.

Use of alternative sources of energy in Poland

In 2011 in Poland the level of renewable energy use was 10.9 % of the total production of energy. The average of European Union which was 20.3 %. However, it was the biggest rise in the whole Union.

Most renewable energy comes from the constant biomass. Poland has particularly good prospects for steady, high market share, because of the availability, effectiveness and EU support for the process of generating energy.

Biomass

Poland, as a country with a large number of farms has the potential for effective and long-term use of this type of source.Biomass is nothing but a dry plant. This is generally straw or wood from fast-growing trees such as willow.

Page 8: Poland : Alternative sources of Energy and Recycling

In Poland, the first biofuel was produced in 1929 - it was a mixture containing 30% of alcohol and 70% of gasoline. However, it quickly disappeared from the market. Renewed interest in alternative energy resources began in the seventies of the twentieth century.

Biofuel

The obligation of adding bio fuels was imposed by the Law of 2nd October 2003. Biocomponents are used in liquid fuels and liquid biofuels.

Since 1st January 2007, another act has enabled the production of biofuels registered by individual farmers, but in a limited amount of 100 l / ha.

We are far from the states which use 85% of the energy from water, but this form is also very popular in our country and is constantly developing. The Vistula, the Oder and rivers of Pomerania region have the greatest energy potential.

Hydro-electric power stations supplied cities and ports in Gdańsk and Gdynia before the Second World War. Now, when technology is already on a high level, the use of waters flowing in our country seems to be desirable and financially logical.

Wind turbines

In 2009, Poland ranked 13th in terms of installed capacity of wind power. Since we have good environmental conditions for the establishment of this type of power supply, its market share will continue to increase.

The best circumstances for the use of wind energy are in Pomerania region (north-east). The central and western part of the country provide similar functionality.

In Poland extraction of energy from this source is still in its infancy, but its power energy is so large that it will interest entrepreneurs who want to invest in the energy market in the future.

Solar CollectorsIn our local area extra funds for solar collectors are not given to citizens, but some of them buy solar collectors themselves. The local goverment helps people with buying them in neighbouring regions.

The gradual transition from traditional to renewable energy is a slow process, but inevitable. It influences both the environment and energy prices. The European Union with its directives contributes to developing this process in Poland.

ecycling assumptions

Recycling means creating appropriate attitudes of producers and creating proper behaviour patterns of recipients of goods.

Recycling takes place in two areas: goods production and waste collection.

aws regarding recycling in Poland

The Polish law has imposed an obligation of selective collection of waste to local governments .

Fulfillment of the obligation of recycling

• packaging• biowaste

• electrical waste and unused electronic equipment

Local governments or enterprises are responsible for serving this purpose for 1 trial year.

To simplify recycling of plastics this code was introduced in 1988 . Originally it was designed for materials applied in dishes and packages used in households. Later it was widened to other materials, as well as to metals. These symbols facilitate sorting in recycling plants and inform consumers what material they are dealing with.

egregation of waste

On 1st July 2013 Poland introduced so-called „litter act". Every citizen had to declare whether they would be segregating rubbish. Many people accepted this form of

the environmental protection.

Did you know? If you don’t sort rubbish, you have to pay more for its collection.

For waste of every kind we have an assigned colour of the container.

Page 25: Poland : Alternative sources of Energy and Recycling

The local governments let people know what kinds of waste exactly should be

sorted

Page 26: Poland : Alternative sources of Energy and Recycling

In Poland we cleverly dispose of not only rubbish but also other things, such as:

hat is the attitude of my neighbours

towards the environment protection?

It is very easy and it’s not time consuming at all. You just have to

get a few wastepaper baskets. For us, sorting rubbish is

already a habit!

We care about the environment as

much as we can. Waste segregation is one of the ways

to do that.

Page 29: Poland : Alternative sources of Energy and Recycling

You don’t need much to protect the environment. Look at me - I switch the light off when I leave the room or turn the water off while brushing my teeth.

I never leave rubbish in the woods and I always clean up after my dog in the

park. That makes the environment less polluted.

I try not to waste water, for example I take a quick shower instead of a bath. I also have a dishwasher, because then I use less water than using running water to wash up the dishes .

Did you know?

• If you collected all the waste in Poland, it would create a mountain which is 1 km long and twice as high as Mount Everest.• 40 mln people produce 10 mln tons of waste a year.• if each citizen of Poland threw away one glass jar, there would be an extra 10 thousand tons of glass at rubbish dumps a year.• Poles throw away 400 mln aluminium tins or cans a year.• recycling of one glass bottle helps to accumulate enough energy to power: a computer for 25 minutes a TV set for 20 minutes a dishwasher for 10 minutes
