The first major renovation project in the state of Florida to receive LEED certification.
Here is our story
Palm Healthcare CARES It began with a kind gift from the late
“Unsinkable” Mollie Wilmot, known for the tanker that shipwrecked on her
Palm Beach Property.
Palm Healthcare Foundation was visionary in its commitment to create a beautiful sustainable building.
Healthy Building
Healthy People
Palm Healthcare CARES
Taking environmentalism to heart, Palm Healthcare Pavilion has been designed to meet LEED Certification.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design
We restored an existing building in the most environmentally
responsible and sustainable way possible.
To serve the underserved.
Palm Healthcare CARES
Palm Healthcare CARES The process of the design and creation of the
structure and it’s subsequent use does the following: Reduces Toxic Pollution and Waste Conserves Resources and Habitats Reduces Global Warming Reduces Ozone Depletion Increases the Health and Well-being of Employees,
Visitors and the Surrounding Community.
Each year, buildings in the US consume approximately 37% of the energy and 68% of the electricity produced in the US.
5 Billion gallons of potable water is used per day
to flush toilets by commercial building occupants. Building related sickness may cost between
$60 and 400 billion per year.Energy Efficient Buildings may reduce harmful carbon
dioxide production by 50%.People spend as much a 90% of their time indoors.
LEED™ is Leadership in Environment Engineering and Design. The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is a
not for profit organization founded in 1993 with a goal of improving the world by helping to lessen the impact of construction upon the environment and our natural resources.
The USGBC created the LEED point-based certification process and it has become the most respected, national accreditation and certification process.
LEED Certified buildings are required to meet 7 prerequisites and are graded
through the use of 34 credits including a total of
69 possible points.
LEED™ is Leadership in Environment Engineering and Design.
The United States Green Building Council (USGBC) is working to transform the way buildings and communities are
designed built operated
enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.
Building Certification According to the USGBC, the LEED awards green
buildings with certification levels based upon a points system ranging from basic Certification (26 points) to Platinum (52-69) points.

The Green Environment
Do you know that experts have found that people working in healthier, more comfortable spaces are more productive. In fact people in Green Buildings have been found to be as much as 16 % more productive.
LEED Certification
It all began in the design process in 2006
Here’s How We Did It
Here’s how we created a green building and what we did to help the environment.
Sustainable Sites Sustainable Site credits are intended to minimize
the impact to the natural world through promoting redevelopment of sites and lessoning the impact on farmlands, habitats and waterways, while encouraging enhanced connectivity to the existing urban landscape.
Sustainable Sites To minimize the impact to the urban
environment the site selected for this project is close to buses and includes alternative transportation:Public Transportation: close to bus routes Bicycles: bike racks, showers and lockers
provided on site.
Sustainable SitesPalm Healthcare has provided 12 preferred parking
spots the that are dedicated to Low Emission Vehicles and Carpooling.
The goal is a reduction in vehicles on the road and
less pollution in our air from automobiles.
Sustainable SitesOther important features:We used a special roofing material that reflects the
sun’s rays instead of absorbing the heat.We carefully chose interior and exterior light fixtures
to control how much light is used, how far it shines and its impact on the surroundings.
Water is a precious resource.
How water aware are you?Brushing your teeth with normal use uses 2-5 gallons of
water.Wet, brush and rinse only uses ½ gallon.Washing your hands with running water uses 2 gallons.
Filling a basin uses 1 gallon.A full tub uses 25-40 gallons.
Shallow water level uses 10 gallons.Shaving with running water uses 20 gallons.
Filling a basin uses 1 gallon.
Water Efficiency Water Efficiency points are earned by reducing the
amount of water that is required in two primary areasTo maintain xeriscape landscape plantings on siteTo operate the building with low flow toilets.
Water Efficiency
We installed a 8,500 gallon underground cistern and xeriscaping plant design [low water needs] on site.
Once the plants have been established, only water collected from the roof will be used to irrigate the landscaping on our property.
Energy and Atmosphere Energy and Atmosphere points are gained through
designing buildings that do the following:
Efficiently use electricity Use on-site renewable energy and green powerProtect the atmosphere from harmful pollutants
Energy and Atmosphere Our strategies included:
Extremely Efficient Air Conditioning EquipmentUse of Solar PowerInsulated Windows Intelligent Use of DaylightEnergy Saving Light Fixtures
and Controls
Energy and Atmosphere We used the following:
A more efficient Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning [HVAC] system.
Controls on the light fixtures that are activated by motion detectors – they turn off automatically when the room is unoccupied.
Double paned reflective glass in the windows
Energy and Atmosphere
Through the use of efficient lighting and air conditioning equipment, Our facility will utilize 21% less electricity than the typical building of similar size.
The Photovoltaic panels on the roof provide 5,400 watts of power to the building systems.
Material and Resources
Material and Resources credits are earned by minimizing reliance on virgin resources.
More than 2.5% of project materials are rapidly renewable – like the use of bamboo.
Over 77% of the construction
waste was diverted from
the landfill.
Material and Resources
Designated areas are provided for collecting recyclable materials
The glass from the existing building was recycled.
Material and ResourcesOver 20% of the material used on the project came
from recycled material.Like the terrazzo floor…
More than 12% of the materials
used on the project came
from within 500 miles of the project
Material and ResourcesWe used low-emitting materials like:
PaintCarpetAdhesives
We recycled an entire building
For the utmost in recycling.
Environmental QualityThis category focuses on the health and comfort of
the inhabitants of the building. Other concerns of the this category include
temperature control for comfort level and provisions for fresh air as well as reduction of carbon dioxide levels.
Environmental Quality
Smoking within all areas
of the building is prohibited.
Innovative Design
Innovative Design credits are available for projects that push the horizons in special ways such as hitting exemplary performance thresholds in another category or utilizing an extraordinary design feature that sets the project apart.
We have committed to use the following green products that keep our planet healthy:
