Foundation and closure of the Academy

The Academy was founded by Plato (428/427 BC – 348/347 BC) in 387 BC in Athens. The Academy persisted throughout the

Hellenistic period as a skeptical school, until coming to an end after the death of Philo of Larissa in 83 BC. Although philosophers continued to teach Plato's philosophy in Athens during the Roman

era, it was not until AD 410 that a revived Academy was

re-established as a center for Neoplatonism, persisting until 529 AD when it was finally closed down by Justinian I.

Location

The Academy was a suburb of in Ancient Athens , close to Kerameikos, near the bank of Kifisou south Hippias Cologne. It was named after its first settler, the hero College . The Academy was sacred grove that walling the 6th century, the son of Pisistratus Hipparchus

The academy of Plato is a region in the northwestern part of the city of Athens. It has an area of 1 sq. km and a population of about 15,000 residents and belongs to the Municipality of Athens.

The purpose

This creation has as a purpose to highlight and connect our history with modern Greece. Also it is a way of understanding the value of

philosophy and highlight its importance for the country’s development. And of course to show the influence of our past in

our future course. But these aren’t the only purposes of the academy.

● The purposes expand to the person individually as it is of great importance to make familiar the students and the wider public with the philosophy for the development of thinking

and the critical ability, personal growth and active participation in social and cultural life.

● Another aim of the Academy is to promote philosophy and philosophical dialogue as a mean to clarify important issues

of the modern society. The education of graduates of philosophical schools and the lifelong learning of adult

citizens in humanities subjects, particularly ethics, political philosophy, philosophy of art, philosophy of natural and social sciences, philosophy of law, history and language.

● Also,a purpose of the academy is contributing to the development of social activities, exchanges and cooperation

between Greek and foreign educational institutions., supporting foreign researchers to conduct research at

postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral levels in Greece , the use of alternative ways of learning based on the

implementation of scientific and educational activities in cultural sites with the active participation of students .

● Last but not least aim the academy has, is to promote and develop other local history and viewing the site of the

Platonic Academy.

● political theory

● music,

● while the succession in leadership was a choice between the core members, called "partners ". The course is distinguished by a

wide variety of entirely different between the theoretical trends and philosophical orientations, embrace in this way the free spirit

and a non dogmatic research that prevail within the academy.
