conventions of the horror subgenre

• The genre often seeks to challenge or confuse the audience's grasp of the narrative or plot by focusing on characters who are themselves unsure of or doubting their own perceptions of reality or questioning their own sanity. Characters' perceptions of their surroundings may be distorted or subject to delusions, outside manipulation or gaslighting by other characters, and even hallucinations or mental disorders.

• Psychological horror aims to create discomfort by exposing common or universal psychological and emotional vulnerabilities/fears and revealing the darker parts of the human psyche that most people may repress or deny

• Common settings for this horror subgenre are as follows: big houses, woodland locations, warehouses, schools and hospitals. These settings create a sense of realism in relation to the audience as they would be able to relate to some elements of the film as they might have seen/been or live in such surroundings. This would increase fear as they would be able to picture themselves in the position of the victims. Another common convention is that there tend to be flashbacks which inform the audience of why the killer has reached such a state.

• Often the sounds/music used in psychological horror films is contrapuntal sound (i.e. the sound does not match the action that is onscreen). This is effective because it is used to contradict what is taking place on screen. The antagonist of psychological horror often comes back for revenge and the victims tend to differ, but females are often the ones that are targeted the most.

and blackmail messages and starts getting very paranoid• Third flash back is to when he’s walking back in the

evening and somebody is following him so he beats them up but they weren't following him.

• Fourth flash back is to when he’s at home at night and at this point he is very paranoid and has gone into a state of madness.

• Fifth flashback is when he thinks someone is breaking into house, but its his girlfriend realises what he’s done flash back to him in his cell saying

the paranoia?
