Dissecting a Scene
• At the end of the film, Chuck, editor-in-chief of The New Republic, is going through all of Stephen’s Articles
• It constantly flashes back and people see how Chuck is getting frustrated because he is realizing Stephen put lies in his articles
•Sound- calming music with a bit of curiosity to show that Chuck is curious if Steve has lied in any other aticles
•Narrative- Chuck is going to look at other works of Steve to show and prove that he has lied in other articles
•Behavior/Mood- serious yet calm as this could change everything at TNR
•Lighting-front lighting is used to show that Chuck is innocent and he is going to prove that he isn’t just going after Steve
•Camera Angle- This is the establishing shot and is also a medium shot and eye-level, showing people what Chuck is about to do
•Scene/Focalization- the scene shows that Chuck is going to look at all of Steve’s articles through a eye-level angle
•Sound- still the same music as in the earlier scene
•Narrative- Chuck is picking out all of the magazine’s that Steve wrote in to see if all his articles are truthful or not
•Behavior/Mood- still calm yet serious as Chuck picks out magazines
•Lighting- still front lighting to show that Chuck is doing the right thing instead of just going on what Steve said
•Camera Angle- still Eye-level and a medium shot, which is used to have people perceive that they are there watching Chuck do all this
•Scene/Focalization- The focalization here is that Chuck is about to sit down and read all of Stephen’s articles to see which ones are real and fake
•Sound-there is no music as Stephen’s voice plays in the background reading off his articles
•Narrative- As Chuck reads this, he realizes that it’s not just one article Steve has lied in
•Behavior/Mood- Chuck is very serious and the whole scene is serious as this determines if Steve is lying or not
•Lighting- it is Side lighting as only half of Chuck’s face is lit, which means that he doesn’t have any bias and only wants the truth
•Camera Angle- it is still eye-level yet is now also a close-up on Chuck so people can see his reaction
•Scene/Focalization- Chuck is reading through Steve’s articles and realizes that he is lied in every issue he has written for TNR
•Sound- the music starts to play again as Steve continues to read his articles out loud
•Narrative- Chuck is realizing that Steve has lied in his articles
•Behavior/Mood- it is very serious as in the last shot
•Lighting- it is still Side-lighting showing the unbiased opinion of Chuck
•Camera Angle- the camera now switches from eye-level to High angle to show that there is still a good amount of magazines for Chuck to go through
•Scene/Focalization- through high angles, people are shown that Chuck believes Steve has lied more than once in his articles
•Sound- music beings to play louder and Steve continues to read his articles
•Narrative- Chuck is picking out the lies in Stephen’s articles
•Behavior/Mood- very serious and sad because Chuck is realizing Steve has lied in every magazine
•Lighting- no specific lighting, but just to show how many articles Chuck has gone through already
•Camera Angle- a high-angle and close-up to show all the magazines Chuck has gone through
•Scene/Focalization- through all the articles, the narrative is being told as ‘Steve has lied a lot in his articles’
•Sound- the music keeps playing as he keeps reading his articles that Chuck is reading
•Narrative- Steve was such a awesome guy, no one would think he would do this
•Behavior/Mood- relaxed and happy because it is a flashback
•Lighting- natural lighting, nothing specific
•Camera Angle- A close-up of Steven from earlier in the film with a smile that shows that he was a guy everyone liked
•Scene/Focalization- through the use of the flashback, people are shown how Steven got away with it: everyone liked him to much
•Sound- music swells as multiple voices of Steve read off his articles
•Narrative- once again, Steve got away with it because he was such a likeable and funny guy to his co-workers
•Behavior/Mood- relaxed, elated yet serious as this shows why Steve was able to do this
•Lighting- nothing specific on any of the 3 people
•Camera Angle- a close-up and focus on one of the editors laughing at a joke Steve made from earlier in the film, with 2 other people being blurred in the back
•Scene/Focalization- through the use of camera angles, the scene here shows just how much people liked Steve
•Sound- the music hits it’s climax as the voices are about to stop reading
•Narrative- the pile of magazines tells people that in every issue there is a lie that Stephen Glass wrote
•Behavior/Mood- serious as now Chuck realizes that he has lied in every issue Steve has written for
•Lighting- nothing specific
•Camera Angle- high and close-up as this shows all the magazines Steve has lied in
•Scene/Focalization- Through the camera angles, people are told that Steve is possibly in deep trouble
•Sound- Steve re=entering the office after asking the security guard
•Narrative- Chuck has discovered the truth
•Behavior/Mood- sad, serious and an air of realization are all present in the scene
•Lighting- it is side-lighting it show most of Chuck’s face and his feelings about what he has realized
•Camera Angle-close-up on chuck with the background blurred
•Scene/Focalization- with a focus on Chuck, people can tell that he will fire Stephen Glass from TNR
