Introduction A projector or image projector is an optical device that projects an

image (or moving image) onto a surface , commonly a projection screen.

The first known record of what might portray the idea of projecting an image on a surface is a drawing by Johannes de Fontana from 1420.

In the 17th century , the first image projector device called “magic lantern” was developed.

What is a Pico projector?A pico projector is a small hardware device designed to project

content from a smartphone , camera , tablet , notebook or memory device onto a wall or other flat surface.

Pico projector use either an LED or laser light source which effectively eliminates the need for lamp replacement over the useful life of a pico.

Pico projectors are tiny battery powered projectors-as small as a mobile phone-or even smaller : these projectors can even embedded inside phones or digital cameras.

Pico projectors are small , but they can show large displays (sometimes up to 100”).While great for mobility and content sharing , pico projectors offer low brightness and resolution compared to larger projectors.

They were introduced as a concept only in 2003 by Explay , they went into production only in late 2008.

They are now estimated to be selling in the millions all over the world and have biggies like Asus , Acer , 3M and more making products as well.

Rainbow effect. Sharp pixel edges.

LCoS

Reflective imaging technology using liquid crystal.

RGB colors delivered simultaneously.

High resolution. No rainbow effect. Smooth pixel edges.

LBS

Image scanning technology using directed laser beams.

RGB color delivered simultaneously.

Focus free Low power

consumption. Small size. Laser is expensive. Speckle. Eye safety.

How do pico projectors work? There are 3 major technologies- DLP , LCoS and Laser beam-steering(LBS)

which power pico projectors.

DLP(Digital Light Processing)Created by Texas Instruments. It is a technology that basically involves using tiny mirrors on a chip that

directs light from a white light source. Each tiny mirror controls a pixel on the target picture , and depending on

how long it’s on , the target pixel gets brighter or dimmer , since it has only on and off states.

Between the light source and the mirrors , is a color wheel that splits light into the three primary colors(red , green , blue) and each mirror controls all three light beams for its designated pixel.

LCoS(Liquid Crystal on Silicon)An LCoS projector uses a small liquid-crystal display(LCD) to control

how much light each pixel gets. There are two basic designs to get color:* Color Filter(CF LCoS):-which uses 3 subpixels with the primary

colors to create finished images.* Field Sequential Color(FSC-LCoS):-which uses a dynamic color filter

and faster LCD which refreshes the colors rapidly. The light source is white light based- either LED or diffused laser.

MECHANISM OF LCoS

The lamp creates a beam of white light. The beam passes through a condenser lens that focuses and directs the light. The white light is separated into red ,green and blue light by a polarizing

beam splitter. Then beams of colored light simultaneously come into contact with one of the three LCoS micro devices. The reflected light from the micro devices passes through a prism that combines the light.Prism directs the light-which now creates a full color image into a projection lens, which magnifies the image and displays it on the screen.

Laser beam steering(LBS) LBS projectors are different , creating the image one pixel at a time using a directed laser beam.

If we scan the image fast enough(usually over 60hz) , we don’t notice this pixel-by-pixel design.

Micro vision is currently the only company with commercialized LBS projectors and embedded modules.

Advantages to LBS over DLP and LCoS:- Focus free. Low power consumption. Small size.

Disadvantages to lasers:- Laser is expensive. Speckle: a random intensity pattern produced by the mutual interference of a set of wave fronts. Eye safety concerns.

Pico projector typesPico projectors are not limited to just being miniature projectors ,

they are also sometimes embedded in other devices ,or devices on their own , that work in tandem to create something of a portable media device.

Base on size , power and devices required , there are a few types of pico projectors

Standalone: Simple pico projectors that work by themselves and required input to display images .They are mostly self powered by batteries.

Embedded: Pico projectors that are embedded with other mobile devices and derive their power and input from them.

Media player: Pico projectors that have onboard storage and minimal processing power ,as well as external storage support that can be used as media devices for playback independently.

USB Projector: Pico projectors that use USB for both power and input.

Applications Cicret smart BraceletA bracelet wearable that can project a touch-controlled screen onto our

arm.Cicret uses a Pico projector to throw your mobile’s screen into your arm.

It features eight proximity sensors which the bracelet uses to detect your finger position so as to feedback controls.

It features its own processor ,storage ,vibration ,feedback , Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity as well as the sensors and projector.

Smart watches with Pico projectorIt allows project an image with high quality graphics and brightness. The watch doesn’t have any button, except of one touch sensitive button, with which you can manipulate the projection.

conclusion Pico projector is an emerging technology that applies the use of an image

projector in a handheld device. They take a number of formats that work in various ways .What they all have

in common is that they are extremely compact and designed to take the place of conventional bulky projectors for presentations and media viewing.

For interactive presentations, a pico projector can enable control of a computer , working in conjunction with a laser pointer, a webcam and an image processing application.

In the near future, we might completely abandon full size projectors if pico projector keep getting powerful.
