Training was given by Chris Brookman, from Back to Earth, an industry expert

who achieved Passive House standards by building with taped wood fibre board.

level of thermal performance and Passive House standards Workshop demonstration and practice Lunch

Travel and visit to Silverton Passive House

Date: 9th December Time: 10am – 3pm Venue: Petroc, Tiverton Campus, Bolham Road, Tiverton, EX16 6SH

Theory of the properties and performance of wood fibre board

Chris Brookman’s presentation

about the properties and uses of

wood fibre board, identifying the

different types and how and where

they are used in the building

process.

Chris brought in samples of wood fibre products to show in the classroom and

use in the workshop session.

Wood fibre insulation boards used internally and

externally for new builds and retro fit. The soft layer fits

snugly, pushing onto rough and uneven surfaces, which

helps to prevent leakages as well as allowing uneven

surfaces to be rectified in most cases.

Case Studies and achieving high standards of thermal regulation including

Passive House

Presentation of case studies of

different projects using wood fibre

board, including retrofitting,

commercial building project aimed

at achieving Passive House

standards, and Silverton Passive

House.

Start of demonstration.

First layer of polystyrene blocks

being fixed into place.

This was to demonstrate the need

for a waterproof protective layer to

be placed underneath the wood

fibre board to prevent water

ingress.

The aluminium tray that Chris is

showing the group is called

UdiBASE plinth starter track. This

is designed to protect the bottom

edge of the insulation if you are

not insulating down in to the

ground.

Special fixings are UdiASSEMBLY

timber fixings used on the wood

fibre board to prevent leakages.

Trimming the interlocking edge off

of the board where the units will

need to butt up against each other

to make a good air free join.

The Glue is a special adhesive

and is specifically designed to

stick the wood fibre to most other

materials. It sticks to

polystyrene, plastics, masonry

and timber but is a water based

acrylate glue.

Visiting the offices at Silverton

Passive House. Chris gave

participants a tour of the Passive

House and offices on site. The

office was built as a practice run to

try out building techniques to

highlight any potential problems

with the planned build and for

training purposes for the workforce

before they started on the main

build.

The exterior of Silverton.

The large overhang on the eaves

as mentioned in the presentation.

In the kitchen, Chris gave a talk

about the interior of the house and

the ventilation system and the

efficiency of the system.

In the plant room of the house, from left to

right, there are buffer tanks for the bore

hole (grey tank left hand side of photo) the

ventilation system (big box with the big

pipes running from) and in the corner you

can just see the boiler. There is also athe

thermal store under the stairs, electrical

consumer units, cat 6 network cabinet and

also the monitoring and data logging

equipment.
