Advertising and Promotional PhotographyAdvertising photography can be used on billboards, newspapers, magazines or web pages. They can be made quite simple and eye catching or they can even make them quite extraordinary and use different post-production techniques to show a different view to their way of advertising. Advertising photography is used to raise awareness of a product and the advertising agencies are the people who mainly use the photographs.Promotional photography is similar to advertising photography but they don’t use the images to directly promote the product in the image. They usually use them to raise the profile of the product. An example I found of an advertising photographer is Tim Wallace. He is a commercial photographer as well as being a car photographer. He has photographed well-known car companies, such as, Ashton Martin, Land Rover, Jaguar and Mercedes. He is highly regarded in the advertising and commercial industry. He also won a recent award which was the “International Commercial Advertising Photographer of the Year”. When a photographer is taking advertising photographs, they use artificial light rather than natural light because it lights up the product more and sharpens the image up and by using artificial light, it gives the photographer more control of how much light they will need to make the photographs look their best. The top and bottom image I selected are both advertising photographs and they have easily used artificial light to capture the sharpness in the ice and the silver parts in the car and this stands out to the people looking at the images and gives the images that extra bit of detail. Depending on what is being photographed, the lenses used are different for different adverts. For the 7-UP advert, they will have used either a macro or wide lense. This is so they can get really close up to the product and fit everything in nicely. The lense type used in the top image would have also been a wide lense so they can fir the car in the image and also get a small proportion of the background in it without letting too much background overfill the image. The images will have been taken in a studio and in a controlled environment so the photographer can position where the product goes and how they will capture the image and so they can adjust the image. There will have been a large amount of post production done to the images to make them look their best and make the images eye catching and “perfect” for their buyers and it just makes it more appealing to them. The post-production team will sharpen up the image, make the colours stronger and in the top image they will have darkened the image and brought out the colours and shadows they will have wanted. For the promotional photography they will use the same techniques and lenses used so that the people or product in the image are looking more appealing and attractive to their buyers and the environment will be very controlled so the photographer has control of what they want the outcome to be like and so they get that outcome.

Page 3: Photography book

The lens used for this image would have been a wide lens because it gets everything in the picture the photographer wants in . If a long lens was used then the photographer would have to stand at a distance to fit everything in and if a macro lens was used it would only get a proportion of the image in.

There has been a large amount of post-production done to this image. They will have taken the image of the pint glass in a studio, probably propped onto a table or box and then the post production team will have layered up the background in stages to create the effect in the pint glass and the background. They will have also used the same pint glass and copied it a couple of times to create the atmosphere of being in a pub with the extra glasses. They might have also put water already into the pint glass so they have the distortion effect of the clouds in the glass when they place the other image over the top.

The environment is very controlled for this image as they will have placed the glass where they want it to be and have complete control of how they want the product looking and how they want to take the image.

The light will be artificial light used so they the right amount of light on the object and so they can have control of the light so it doesn’t turn out overexposed of underexposed.

It’s made so that the advertiser is also giving a visual insight of that good feeling that Guinness lets off by manipulating the image to a fascinating and exciting image for the buyer to look at. This type of photography is completely different

to something like photojournalism but is similar to fashion photography.

Page 4: Photography book

Fashion PhotographyFashion photography is mainly seen in fashion magazines, such as, VOGUE or ELLE. They can also be featured on web pages. Fashion photography is posing models to wear different and unique clothing or sometimes just everyday outfits and these are placed in fashion magazines, mainly for people who are middle class/higher-class that enjoy flicking through magazines with more images than articles. The models can also be used to advertise different fashion brands by wearing their clothes or jewellery and this helps them gain more buyers when they see the clothes being advertised. An example of a different fashion photographer who works differently to how other fashion photographers work is Jonathan Leder. For his fashion photographs, he uses natural lighting and hardly any artificial lighting and he doesn’t retouch his images which leaves his images completely natural. He is the founder of Jacques Magazine and is also the Creative Director of the magazine. His clients have included Italian ELLE, Urban Outfitters, Adidas and many more. Normally when doing fashion photography, the photographers do the complete opposite to how Jonathan Leder works. Depending on what the shoot is representing, most fashion photography is took in a studio but sometimes they can be taken outside using various props for the shoot. Even though they can be taken outside at times, it is still a very controlled environment and the photographer decides what the models will wear and how they will wear it and they will also choose where and how the images will be taken. This then gives a better outcome for the photographer. The lighting used is mainly artificial light because it brings out shadows and different features on the model and will give an even amount of light on the pictures as there might not be enough natural light to fulfil the photographers needs. The lens used for some fashion shots will be mainly a wide lens just like the images on the side, they have all been taken with a wide lens to get the full models in and as they don’t need to shoot the images from a distance. Fashion photographers also do a lot of post production to the images to give the images “perfection”. They remove wrinkles, spots, little imperfections which makes us who we are and makes the models skin smoother and makes certain features stand out and this gives the readers something to look up to and gives them something that they can work towards so they can look like they do.

Page 5: Photography book

This image will have been taken in a studio and a simple background has been used so that the shadow stands out in the background and also lets the model stand out as she is wearing bright colours and she is against a grey background so the colours contrast.

The photographers control how they want the image and how the model is positioned and how she is dressed and where the image is taken.

There will have been a lot of artificial light used in this image so that they can create the shadow on the back and to bring out different features and makes the model stand out.

The models usually wear designer brands to advertise the designers clothes, shoes or accessories and usually wear clothes which are unique to make a statement with the clothes they’re wearing.

This image will have had a lot of post production done to it to get rid of the models imperfections and to make her skin smoother with no wrinkles or lines in her skin. It will have also been used to bring out the brighter colours in the image and to darken the shadow so it stands out more and then brighten the light in the image.

This image will be used in a fashion magazine which is mainly aimed at middle to higher class.

Fashion photography is similar to fine art photography but is different to medical photography.

PhotojournalismPhotojournalism is photography used to tell news stories and are photos which document events at the times that they are taking place. They are unbiased images and are understood culturally too. They are powerful and can be impacting pictures to the person looking at the image. They can be used in magazines, they can be put onto websites, books and can be for individual clients as wedding photography is classed as photojournalism. Photojournalism is a range of different categories including war, sport, travel, weddings and paparazzi photography. An example of a photojournalist is wedding photographer Joe Buissink. He started being a wedding photographer because he was drawn to the honest emotions displayed and he has also photographed celebrities weddings, such as, Keyshia Cole, Christina Aguilera and many more. Photojournalism photographs are took mainly using natural light. This is because war images will have been took how they have been without it being set up because they are took there and then. But for wedding photography, sometimes they may use artificial light when taking some portraiture images because it helps the images become more well lit and balances out the light for the photos. For the top and bottom image, they will have both been took using natural light and the middle image will have also used natural light for that image but if it was more of a studio type image it will have been took using artificial light. For wedding photos, sometimes they can be took in a controlled environment when it comes to the group shots because the photographer will want them in certain positions for the shots, where as when the photographer is going round taking the pictures of the guests unexpectedly, they will be taken in an observational environment because the photographer isn’t wanting certain poses done and they are being taken as they are. The middle image will have been in a controlled environment because the photographer will have wanted the bridesmaids doing that pose and so it won’t have been took how it was seen. Most photojournalism will have been captured using a wide lens, but for some paparazzi shoots, they may use longer lenses because they may not be allowed near the celebrities so to get a good image they will use a longer lens. All the images on the right will have been taken with a wide lens as they are not too far away from the subject and can fit everything in by using a wide lens. Some photojournalism shoots will sometimes use post production. For example, paparazzi shoots and wedding photographs may have been altered using post production so they can get that good quality image and make the image look it’s best. For war time images they won’t use post production because they won’t want to change the image because they are took how they are seen so it would defeat the whole idea editing them after they have been took. The top and bottom image will have not had post production done to them and will be completely natural, where as the middle image may have had some post production done to it because it then gives the clients a better image to have.

Page 7: Photography book

This is a general shooting an assassin and it has a powerful aspect to the image as it is showing the last moments of someone's life.

This image will have been took using natural light as the photographer will not have had time to set up lights and as it’s a natural picture it would look more artificial using artificial lights.

It will have been took in an observational environment because the photographer will have come across this happening and then took the image and it hasn’t been set up for the photographers satisfaction.

There will have been no post production done to the image as it keeps the image looking natural .

The image will have been taken with a wide lens as the photographer is near to the action and won’t need to use a long lens.

Photojournalism is similar to documentary photography but is different from illustration photography.

Page 8: Photography book

PortraiturePortraiture photography involves taking pictures of a person or a group of people mainly up close so that they capture their facial features and facial expressions and that they are made predominant. The background and bodies of the models can be used in the images but the main focus should be kept on their faces and their facial expressions. They are mainly for individual clients but they can be seen and used in magazines, books and galleries. Ian Phillips-McLaren is a portraiture photographer who did his first album cover for ‘Wet Wet Wet’ and did portraits for Vidal Sassoon and these were then published in American Vogue. He is also a 3 time nominee and a recipient of a ‘Honourable Mention in the International Color Awards’. His career has become successful and is shooting portraits of artists, celebrities and real people. Some of his clients have included MTV, Nokia, Topshop, Littlewoods and Kodak. Portraiture photographers mainly use wide lenses or sometimes they may use macro lenses to get close up to the detail in the models face. This is because they are not far away form the models so they don’t need to use long lenses to capture their models. There is a lot of post production after the images have been taken. This is because they remove imperfections from the models and make them thinner and more attractive and this gives the readers something to look up to and the photographers then feel their photographs are perfect as they look perfect to them. For portraits, the photographers use artificial light mainly and even when doing shoots outside they also use artificial light as well as the natural light to brighten the images up and brighten the models up too and this gives a good balance of light and shadow for their images. The environment is very controlled when taking portraits because the photographer decides what pose the model does and how they want the image to look. For the images on the right, they have all been took so that the main focal point of the images are their faces. The top one is posed so she is looking to her left and not straight on at the camera, the second image has her hair covering part of her face which makes us look at that part of the image first and she also has a headband in which helps us focus at that part of the image. The final image is set so she is posed pushing her head forward so it stands out from the rest of the image and her body. These have all been edited afterwards so that the images have an off colour to them and the images have been toned down and made softer so that the colours are not too harsh on the audiences eyes. The top two images have been taken in a studio and had a background with just a plain colour on it so the attention is not took of the models and the bottom image has been taken outside but still has a darker background to the model so the attention is still on her. The lighting is very dark but still lights up the right parts of the models so that they are standing out and have all been taken using artificial lights. They have all had a wide lens used to take the images because the models are close to the photographers.

Page 9: Photography book

This image has been took with a wide lens as they are getting quite close to the model so a long lens wouldn’t be necessary.

The image has had a lot of post production done to it. The photographer has brought out the darker shadows in the image, softened the models skin, removed wrinkles in the skin and discarded her imperfections. They might have also added in extra hair to make it thicker and brought out her best features.

The photographer will have also changed the image to black and white to make it a softer image to go with the softness of the model.

The environment for this image will have been controlled. This is so the photographer has control on how the model stands, how she is looking at the camera and how they want the image to turn out at the end.

The image will have been taken in a studio and the photographer will have had a simple, plain background so that the model stands out against the background and makes her the focal point of the image.

The photographer will have used artificial light, especially with less natural light being let in in a studio. This is so the right light is on the model and helps the shadows stand out on the model.

Page 10: Photography book

High Street PhotographyHigh street photography is now becoming very hard to do now as people are buying their own digital cameras and can take images themselves and with high charges, home studios are now becoming more popular to independent photographers. They take photos of portraiture which include family portraits, pet portraits or baby portraits. They also focus on doing wedding photography for clients. They can be featured in books, magazines but they are mainly taken for individual clients. Orange Street Photography is a studio in Essex and the photographer (Glen Arnold) focuses on portraiture and wedding photography as well as doing party shoots, promotional shoots and product shoots. For high street photography, they are based in studios which means they use simple and plain backgrounds so that the models in the image stand out, just like the images on the right. For high street shoots, the portraiture shoots are more relaxed and less serious than portraiture photography because these shoots are manly for individual clients so there isn’t as much as a restriction as what can and can’t be done. The photographer still works in a controlled environment as they provide what props will be used and how the images will be taken but it’s only to a certain limit because the photographer has to meet the clients needs and capture what they want to see not just what the photographer wants to see. As the shoots are taken in a studio, only artificial light is used. This is so that the right amount of light is used to create perfect shadows and make the pictures bright and bring out the colours more. The photographer can change the tone and the colouring of the images and change them to monochrome so that they match the tone of the image and this is done in post production. The bright coloured images may be changed in post production to bring out the brightness in the images and this makes the colours stronger and bolder to the eyes of the clients. This type of photography is similar to portraiture photography but high street photography is not as serious and as controlling. The lens used for high street photography will be a wide lens because the photographer is close enough to the subject so they wouldn’t need a long lens. This type of photography is different from something like documentary photography or photojournalism because it’s not as natural as these types of photography are.

Page 11: Photography book

This image has been converted to black and white as the client may have wanted the image like this or the photographer may have thought it worked better in monochrome because the image may not have contained bright colours.

The photograph was taken in a studio so this means that artificial light was used to balance out the right amount of light and because natural light wouldn’t have been available in the studio.

The image will have had post production done to it afterwards to smoothen the image and make the image look it’s best. The photographer may have got rid of the woman's imperfections and smoothened out the dogs fur.

The background will have been a plain background so that the model and her dogs stand out from the background and this helps the image when it’s been transferred to monochrome as the background may have been distracting.

The lens used for this shoot will have been a wide lens because the photographer will be close enough to the model without using a long lens as there is no restriction to how close they can get to the subject.

The environment is still quite controlling but it’s not as serious as portraiture photography and the photographer is meeting the clients needs so they have to accept their needs and then control how they will take the images for the shoot.

ArchitectureArchitecture photography is capturing the pleasing and extraordinary aspects of a building or something of a similar structure. Some artists like to capture an element of art in their images like the top image shows. Architecture photography can display repetitive patterns in them and display the elegance and beauty of some buildings and the photographers pay close attention to the details shown in the buildings. The images can be put in books, magazines, leaflets, on billboards and can be for individual clients.Simon Kennedy is an architectural photographer based in London who has been exhibited and published widely and his clients have included The BBC, Jansen Magazine, Building Design, BD, Tank Magazine and Hopkins Architects. Architecture photography can be taken with a wide lens and sometimes if the photographer is focusing on details on the buildings they will sometimes use a macro lens. Sometimes the photographers need special lenses for architecture photography but they don’t need a long lens to shoot the images because they will be near to the subject which means they won’t need to use a long lens and to get all of the building in, a wide lens would be more suitable for this. The photographers use natural light for the images because the buildings are outside so it’s easier for the photographer to use the natural light and then if they need the image to be a bit brighter, they can brighten it up in the post production. If the images are being taken of the inside of a building, they might use (to a certain extent) artificial light so that they can get the right balance of light and shadows for their images. The environment is observational as the photographer will see the building and take the image from where they are. They could more to different angles or in a different position to take the picture but they can’t physically control the building/structure they are taking a photograph of. Some architectural photographers will use post production after they have took the images but not all of them do because it then makes the image more natural. The photographers might convert the images to monochrome and some of the photographers will bring out the colour more to brighten the colours in the image and then if the image is for advertising purposes they may do a bit more post production to the image but they don’t do much to them.

Page 13: Photography book

This image will have had a small amount of post production to it by brightening the sky and they might of softened the sea so that the reflections from the light stand out more against the water.

The image will have been taken only using the available natural light and if the image was quite dark as it’s taken at night time, they will have brightened it during post production to make it a higher definition and more appealing to the people looking at the image.

Architecture photography is similar to advertising and promotional photography but is different from high street photography.

The environment will have been observational but the photographer will have positioned themselves so that they can get the buildings they want in the image and get the right image for the photographer but they couldn’t physically control the buildings for their image. The lens used to

take this image will have been a wide lens so that the buildings could all fit into the camera and they will have been standing reasonably close so they wouldn’t need to use a long lens.

Medical PhotographyMedical photography is when a set of professional medical photographers take a set of photographs of different conditions and procedures. They record the clinical appearance of a condition. Their work can be displayed in books, articles, accompany scientific and medical reports, journals, published electronically and can be used in research papers. The photographs which are taken have the same confidentiality as any medical record and are only seen by the staff who are working on the clients case and is strictly confidential. There is a set of photographers for The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals, who are, Mike Wigglesworth is the Chief Clinical Photographer, Alexander Buchanan is the Senior Clinical Photographer, Jenna Greenwood is the Clinical Photographer and Scarlet Hindle is the Clinical Photographer too. The photographs are used for numerous reasons within the medical sector and can help other patients as well as themselves. For medical photography, natural light isn’t commonly used but the cameras which are used do have flash and this can be used when taking some images because the operating lights will provide enough light for the images and there won’t be enough natural light for images to be taken in the operating theatre. Macro lenses will have been used and wide lenses as they will need to get really close to certain parts of the body for detailed images and using a long lens wouldn’t capture the right image for them. The environment will be observational as the photographer won’t have control of what they will be taking images of so they will have to work with what they have and then move to a reasonable position so they can take the images to the photographers and clients needs. There will be no post production done to the photographs as the purpose for the images are that they provide photographic evidence to conditions and procedures and by editing the images after they have been took will not act as a reliable source for any book or scientific/medical report. For medical photography, they have to use special equipment and techniques for difficult situations that they come across. This can include endoscopy (for looking at internal organs), thermal imaging, photography outside the visible spectrum, time-lapse cinematography and macrography. Medical photography is similar to photojournalism but is different from portraiture photography.

Page 15: Photography book

The lighting used in this image will have been the operating lights and flash may have been used just to brighten up the area which is being photographed.

The environment is observational as the photographer is going into a theatre and taking images of what’s going on and isn’t making the people pose or look un-natural.

The lens used for this image is a wide lens because it fits everything in that’s needed and a macro lens wouldn’t be needed for this particular case as the main focus is the procedure. There will have

been no post production done to this image as it is taken naturally and will be kept natural as It's for records and not personal use.

Medical photography is similar to photojournalism but it’s different from portraiture.

IllustrationIllustration photographs are photographs which help influence how the reader is feeling. They are used alongside a newspaper article or magazine article to help visualise the information for the reader and provide more information for the reader. They can be used in books, magazines, newspapers, websites or leaflets. Illustration photography can be step to step images which help guide the audience through something visually. They can be used in educational textbooks to convey the information for the readers as well. The top image is a psychology textbook and the images which are used within the textbook are there to visualise the information for the readers. The second image is a book which is about birds and the image on the front shows the birds of the Island of Bute and this gives the reader a visual insight of the birds. The bottom image is of a step to step image for a certain way of using eye shadow. This helps readers who would find it easier to visually see how to do it rather than read on how to do it, it makes it a lot easier. Depending on what the picture is and what it’s representing, the lens that the photographer will vary. For example the middle image will have been taken with a longer lens because the birds will be quite a distance from the photographer and by using a long lens, the photographer can get a detailed but close up image which they wouldn’t have got by using a wide lens. For the bottom image, the camera used will have been a wide lens or macro lens because the photographer is close to the subject and wouldn’t have needed a longer lens to take these images. The environment varies as well depending on what the photographer is taking an image off. For the bottom image, the environment will be controlled and the photographer will be able to adjust certain positions to get the right images for the photographer. But for the middle image, the environment will have been observational. The photographer will have known what they were needing to take a picture of but they wouldn’t of been able to pose the birds and they wouldn't have been able to adjust anything in the image because they will have been a fair distance away from the birds. For some of the images, artificial light will have been used. For example, the top image will have been took using artificial light to get the models lit up right. Where as the middle image will have been took using natural light because the subject will be far away and because the image isn’t took in a studio or indoors the photographer will use natural light to take the image. There may have been some post production done to the images but not a large amount will have been done. They will have only used it to tidy up the images took and bring out the colours in the pictures and brighten them up so they are looking their best and at a high quality. The photographer won’t do much to the image because they are made to look realistic and natural.

Page 17: Photography book

These images are step to step images which will have been taken using a wide lens as the photographer is close to the subject so a long lens wouldn’t be needed.

Illustration photography is similar to photojournalism but is different from portraiture as they use a lot of post production afterwards.

These images will have been taken in a studio with a plain, white background because this doesn’t become distracting and keeps the focus on the model.

The photographer will have been working in a controlled environment as they would have been able to move the model and position the model where they needed him to be to get the right image.

There will have been not much post production at all to these set of images and if there was it will have been only to brighten the image up and tidy it up as the images don’t need much doing to them because it makes them look more natural.

The lighting used for these images will have been artificial because they have been taken in a studio with minimum natural light.

Page 18: Photography book

Fine ArtFine art photography is photography that is created for artistic reasons and isn’t there to record historical events like photojournalism does. There is a broad variation of what is included within the fine art sector of photography, such as, wildlife, nudes and wildlife, portraits, landscapes and seascapes and they can range from colour photography to monochrome. They are mainly used in books and for individual clients but that’s about it. They could also be seen in magazines and in galleries. There is usually a metaphorical meaning in the images and can express the emotions of how the photographer is feeling and they should be expressed using fine art photography. Fine art is slightly different from other types of photography and the photographer should consider themselves as artists. It is also a very complex but sophisticated way of presenting pictures and the photographs represent an interpretation of the model/subject. Mona Kuhn is a fine art photographer who was born in Brazil in 1969 and she focuses on the nude side of fine art and focuses on portrait photography. Her work is being held in collections including Sir Elton John, Getty Museum, Musee de l'Elysee in Switzerland and many more. For fine art photography, depending on what the subject of the images are, the lighting depends on this. If the images are of portraits and are took in a studio then artificial light will be used and this is to balance out the right light in the images. Then if the images are of landscapes or taken of seascapes, the light will be natural as there will be more access to natural light outside than in a studio. The environment again depends on what the shoot is about. If it’s portraiture like the top and middle image, it will be a controlled environment as the photographer is setting up the picture and how the models are posing. But if it’s outside or to do with wildlife, it’s an observational environment because the photographer can’t control how the image will look, they can only move angles and positions to get an image they want. The lens used to take the images also depend on the shoot. For the top and middle image, the lens used will have been a wide lens because the photographer can get close to the subject and wouldn’t need a long lens. But for the bottom image, the photographer will have needed a long lens so they can get really up close and maintain all the detail of the insect and get a really good image. If the photographer used a wide lens, it wouldn’t of been able to get as close because the photographer may have been a distance from the insect. Bu the other option is that the photographer may have got really close to the insect and was brave enough to use a macro lens to get the amount of detail in the face of the insect. Depending on the shoot again, post production varies. Some photos like the top and middle image might have had a large amount of post production because they are portraiture images and they have made her skin smoother and “perfect”. But the bottom image might not have had as much post production done to it and may have only had the colours brought out and might have sharpened some parts of the image up.

Page 19: Photography book

Fine art photography is similar to portraiture but is different from advertising and promotional photography.

This image might not have had as much post production done to it like some fine art photographs. The photographer has converted the image into monochrome and sharpened up parts of the image but not much has been done to it.

The lighting used for this image is natural light because it’s an image taken outside and there is natural light available so there is no need for artificial light.

For this image, the photographer will have used a long lens as the subject will have been a distance away from the photographer and to look like they were really close, a long lens is ideally used for it.

The environment for this image is observational. This is because the photographer will have come across the subject and have no control on how the subject is positioned and stood so the photographer has to work with this.

Page 20: Photography book

DocumentaryDocumentary photography is when photographers record chronicle and historical events by capturing them on their cameras. Some people link documentary photography to photojournalism, but photojournalism has a broader way of capturing images and doesn’t just focus on historical events as it includes sport photography and travel photography. Documentary photographers usually work on a longer term project and how the times have changed during this period of time and this keeps a record for the photographer and for members of the public of what is happening which the public can’t see. Where as photojournalism focuses on breaking news stories rather than focusing on doing a long term project and this separates the two. Documentary photography is also used to spur social changes and political changes too. Documentary photographs can be seen in books, websites, magazines, billboards, articles, galleries and for research. Jill Freedman is a New York documentary photographer who has award-winning work and her work is included in the permanent collections of ‘The Museum of Modern Art’, ‘The International Centre of Photography’ and many more. She is well-known for her street and documentary work and has a collection of books which she has published. For documentary photography the images will mostly be taken with a wide lens because the subject will be close to the photographer and there wouldn’t be any point using a long lens as it wouldn’t fit the whole image in that is being seen. The environment is an observational environment as the photographer is going around and seeing the images and doesn’t have control on posing any of the pictures as models are not used and are mainly images of inanimate objects. The light which is used will be natural light as the images aren’t taken in a studio so there will be no where for the photographer to set up artificial lights and it would make the images less natural using artificial light. There won’t be much post production done to the images as this will keep them natural and then they wouldn’t be natural historical photos of events if they have been changed and edited to something that isn’t there. The photographer may change some of the images to monochrome to create a deep and mysterious mood to the images and they may change the brightness of the image and may tone them down so they are darker.

Page 21: Photography book

Documentary photography is similar to photojournalism but it’s different from advertising or promotional photography.

This image will have been took using natural light as artificial light wouldn’t be needed and as the photographer is on the move constantly there wouldn’t be any need to set up artificial light. The environment for this image will have

been observational as the photographer will have come across this area and took the image of how it is and not set anything up to keep it natural.

There won’t have been any post production done to the image to keep it natural looking and not fake as it’s for historical use. The photographer might have converted the image into monochrome to have a chilling mood and dark mood to the image.

The photographer will have used a wide lense to take this image, but it might have been took with a long lens because the fence might have been a fair distance away from the building and a long lens might have been needed.
