DESIGN AND ENVIRONMENT

A lobby and shopping area at the bottom of the tower is known as the Crystal Court, and provides skyway connections between the tower and four adjacent blocks.

Skyway, an enclosed or covered bridge between two or more buildings

Because of the IDS Center's peculiar and unique Stepback design, termed "zogs" by its architect, Philip Johnson , each floor has up to 32 corner offices.

CRYSTAL COURT

Page 10: Philip johnson & his works

With floor to ceiling windows and some inventive space planning, virtually every square foot of the building have access to daylight.”

The IDS Tower has an 8-story annex extending along the Marquette Avenue side of the building. This building is a true annex; the 4th through 8th floors can only be reached through the IDS Tower elevators. The 3rd floor can only be reached through the Marquette Hotel elevators.

The building has not been without structural problems. Since soon after its construction, the Crystal Court had issues with water leaking through the roof after rain or snow

There are also frequent problems in the winter when ice falls from the tower and onto the court's glass roof panels, often breaking through.

The building has two Mechanical floor between the 8th and 9th floor and two mechanical floors between 51 and the roof level.

They are not accessible from any of the building's passenger elevators and contain HVAC equipment

MECHANICAL FLOORS

A mechanical floor, mechanical penthouse, or mechanical level is a story of a high-rise building that is dedicated to mechanical and electronics equipment. "Mechanical" is the most commonly used term, but words such as utility, technical, service, and plant are also used. They are present in all tall buildings

While most buildings have mechanical rooms, typically in the basement, tall buildings require dedicated floors throughout the structure for this purpose

Mechanical floors are generally counted in the building's floor numbering (this is required by some building codes) but are accessed only by service elevators.

Page 23: Philip johnson & his works

INTRODUCTIONTHE MUNSON-WILLIAMS-PROCTOR ARTS INSTITUTE IS A MODERN MASTERPIECE LOCATED IN UTICA, NEW YORK.

IT WAS THE FIRST OF MANY INFLUENTIAL CULTURAL FACILITIES DESIGNED BY PHILIP JOHNSON. IT MARKS THE END OF JOHNSON’S LOYALTY TO THE INTERNATIONAL STYLE AND THE BEGINNING OF HIS EXPERIMENTATION WITH NEO-CLASSICISM.

Page 24: Philip johnson & his works

THE MUSEUM INCLUDE ART GALLERIES AND SPACES FOR FILM SCREENINGS, MUSICAL PERFORMANCES, ART CLASSES, AND LECTURES.

JOHNSON FOCUSED HIS DESIGN ON RESOLVING ISSUESOF CIRCULATION, LIGHTING ANDADAPTABILITY.

Page 25: Philip johnson & his works

THE MUSEUM STANDS AS A THREE-STORY SYMMETRICAL STRUCTURE, EMBEDDED INTO A SITE THAT SLOPES DOWN TOWARDS ITS REAR.

A MONOLITHIC CUBIC MASS WRAPPED IN DARK GREY CANADIAN GRANITE FLOATS ABOVE A CONTINUOUS CURTAIN WALL.

THE UNIQUE STRUCTURAL CONCEPT—TWO EXTRUDED BRONZE-CLAD FERROCONCRETE PILLARS ATTACHED TO EACH FAÇADE—IS PARTICULARLY PROMINENT.

THE ROOF IS SUPPORTED BY INTERSECTING GIRDERS ABOVE, WHICH REST ON THE PILLARS BELOW.

Page 26: Philip johnson & his works

PLANTHE MUSEUM LAYOUT IS ARRANGED AROUND A CENTRAL, DOUBLE-HEIGHT SCULPTURE GALLERY THAT RECEIVES DAYLIGHT FROM DEEP BOX SKYLIGHTS ABOVE.

SURROUNDING THE OPEN GALLERY ARE SMALLER EXHIBITION SPACES OF VARYING SHAPES AND SIZES THAT UTILIZE INCANDESCENT LIGHTING.

ABOVE, THE UPPER FLOOR IS SUSPENDED FROM THE ROOF AND WRAPS AROUND THE CENTRAL COURT.

MIRRORED, CANTILEVERED SCISSOR STAIRS PROVIDE ACCESS FROM BELOW. THE BASEMENT LEVEL MIMICS THE OVERALL SPATIAL LAYOUT. AGAINST THE CURTAIN WALL, OFFICES SURROUND A CENTRAL 271-SEAT AUDITORIUM.

THE REAR OF THIS LEVEL MEETS THE SLOPED GRADE AND OFFERS ACCESS TO THE PARKING LOT.
