What is Philadelphia Gas Works?• Natural gas utility company founded in 1836• Largest municipality-owned gas company in the U.S.• 6,000 miles of gas mains and service pipes• 78 billion cubic feet of gas delivered annually• 500,000 customers

How Does PGW Make Money?• PGW acquires gas from suppliers then sells to households• Philadelphia residents choose their gas provider• PGW installs gas connections for new houses• Repairs gas appliances installed by PGW

My Role – Summer 2016• Information Services department ensures all technical equipment is working• Project Manager intern in the Information Services department• Assisted my supervisor with her projects• Help out on eight different projects• Set up and attend meetings, solicit requirements, update project plan,

consolidate invoices, fill out required forms, and more

My Role – Fall 2016• Continued to help my supervisor, Sherri, with her projects until her

departure on October 28th

• Took on two projects, Four Winds and RiskMaster to complete while being assigned two new projects

• Four Winds is a project where 19 TVs and content players will be hung up throughout PGW locations to display various information

• RiskMaster is a software solution for Risk and Legal departments to work more efficiently

• Transitioned assistance to another project manager October 31st

The Road Ahead• I am working on completing Four Winds

and RiskMaster• I am working with Joe Szlanic, Director

of Enterprise Strategic Services on two new, small projects

• I am helping another project manager, Mark, with his projects by entering status update reports through Microsoft SharePoint

• My role has ensured that projects were moving along as planned and that all issues are resolved in an effective manner

• Internship to continue through May 2017

Some Tasks I Performed• Schedule meetings in Microsoft Outlook• Call software vendors and schedule a demonstration• Attend meetings and take down notes• Reach out to various people within PGW who were on the same project• Work on project plan by entering in dates, budgets, and resources• Fill out forms such as Change Management and User Acceptance Testing• Provide weekly status updates in PGW’s Microsoft SharePoint site

Cross Curriculum• HRM 1101 – taught me how to work with people

and be effective in demonstrating leadership• ACCT 2101/2 – helped me understand invoices

when figuring out how much money is left to spend on a project

• BA 2196 – provided the knowledge regarding sending concise yet meaningful emails and verbal communication skills

• MSOM 3101 – showed me how various people in the department and company work together to achieve a task

• MIS 2501 – taught me how a company’s infrastructure works and how critical it is that all systems are working

• MIS 3506 – strengthened my skills in soliciting requirements and paying attention to details

What Have I Learned?• I have learned what it is like to be a project

manager while getting a glimpse of other roles in the Information Services department• Network engineers• Database administrators• Developers

• I understand how a business functions and how each department is fundamental for operation

• I have a better understanding of how companies buy and sell their products
