Strategies, Tactics and
Principles of Play
Tactics
Tactics are based on making the most of your strengths whilst exploiting your opponents weaknesses. A ‘game-plan’. Example: - In badminton playing to opponents backhand as it is their weak shot.
Strategies
A strategy is often referred to as a formation.
Example – Football = 4-4-2 or in Basketball = 1-2-2 zone defence
1-2-2 Zone Basketball
Principles of Play Tactics and strategies are often based upon or can be improved by applying principles of play.Hockey - Width – Attacking on a wide front spreads out the defence and gives the attack more alternatives. More gaps are opened up in the opposing defence. The defence which is marking a wide attack is less compact therefore weaker.
