What PDHPE involves in the K-6 Curriculum

✦ It is a requirement that school programs incorporate the skills of communicating, decision making, interacting, moving and problem solving. It is also important that all strands be addressed in each of the stages of primary schooling.

✦ It is expected that over K-6 the following subject matter will be addressed in all stages:

✦ Active Lifestyle

✦ Dance

✦ Games and Sports

✦ Growth and Development

✦ Gymnastics

✦ Interpersonal Relationships

✦ Personal Health Choices

✦ Safe Living

PDHPE Should be:✦ FUN

✦ EVERYONE’S INCLUDED

✦ IMPROVES SKILLS

✦ POSITIVE HEALTH EDUCATION

✦ PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

PDHPE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE....

✦ Incorporates both theory and physical activity

✦ Works to build positive body image and sense of self

✦ Encourages all students to actively participate

✦ Works across and can incorporate all other Key Learning Areas

✦ Offers practical alternatives to learning

✦ Promotes opportunities to develop or build on skills

✦ Learn to be safe and responsible young adults

RATIONALE✦ PDHPE is a crucial key learning area in the K-6 curriculum. Given the rising concern in

Australia around childhood obesity and the new generation of children who are exposed to greater technologies and social networking it is vital that teachers include PDHPE in their weekly lesson plans to promote not only healthy eating and physical activity but also information around cyber-bullying, safety and encouraging students to become socially responsible adolescents and young adults.

✦ PDHPE offers so much more in education than just a time for children to be outdoors and running around. The physical component is all inclusive of students and the theory component offers a safe space for learning around many sensitive issues and safety.
