Our MissionOur Mission

The Mission of the Philadelphia Children’s Foundation is to foster positive

career and life-changing decisions in children of all ages.

We strive to inspire our youth to discover their interests, pursue their passions, and develop the skills they need to lead more

fulfilling lives and better serve their families and communities.

Through our career-centered approach we help spark a curiosity to explore a world of opportunities.

Our goals are to increase high school graduation rates, boost post-secondary education enrollment, and expand career

potential, particularly for disadvantaged children in our city.

The FactsThe Facts

Only 78.5% of Philadelphia’s 25+ age group graduated high school.

The Philadelphia School District ranks only 65th in over all graduation rates

among the 100 largest school districts in the country.

Page 4: PCF Introductory Presentation

Over 50% of 9th graders in the Philadelphia public schools between 2000-2005 did not graduate in four years. 40% of 9th graders still had not received a diploma after 6 years!

In any one year about 8,000 students officially dropped out and an additional 5,000 spent so little time in school researchers called them near “drop outs”. One third of all drop-outs were in grade nine and below.

Over 90,000 students and families in the Philadelphia School District have no computer at home and for many Philadelphians getting internet access may be years in the future.

Over 100,000 children in the Philadelphia area are waiting for a mentor.

Studies show that computers at home with internet access not only inspire children to learn but they also help parents become more effective learning partners.

A recent study reported that 45% of internet users, or about 60 million Americans, have in the last two years used the internet to make big decisions.

Other studies have also shown that children that are mentored are 50% less likely to drop out of school and 46% less likely to use illegal drugs.
