Paul robeson

He was born on April 9, 1898 in Princeton, New Jersey . His father was a runaway slave.Robeson obtained worldwide fame unlike anyone else during his time. He was a true Renaissance ManClick to advance8After high school in Summerville New Jersey, Robeson took a competitive state exam and wona full scholarship to Rutgers University. He was the only African American on campus. Nonetheless, he overcame extreme racism and earned 18 letters in football, baseball, and track. He sung in the choir, acted in plays, won an oratory contest, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. Robeson graduated Rutgers at the top of his class, and then traveled to Harlem to attend Columbia university Law School

In New York, he became a legend during the Harlem Renaissance.In 1934 He won world wide acclaim in England and on Broadway as Shakespeare's Othello

Robesons rich baritone voice made him a beloved star throughout the world. Although he was known for unearthing negro spirituals, he had an insatiable love for the folk songs of cultures around the world.

Robeson spoke 25 languages and befriended many artist and politicians oversees . He became a huge star of film. Stage. Radio and concert Halls.

This earned him the acrimonyof the us government and a subpoena to testify before the infamous house on un-American activities, where he refused to state whether or not he was a communist
