USCCB: Catholic Campaign for
Immigration Reform (CCIR)
June 2005-Implementation of Strangers No Longer. Goals:
• Educate Catholics on the benefits of immigration and immigrants to our country
• Advocate for legislation that promotes legal pathways for migrant workers and their families to migrate in a safe, humane and orderly manner
• Organize Catholic legal service networks to assist immigrants in accessing the benefits of reforms
Archdiocese of Chicago by numbers
– Hispanic parishes in the country
• 352 parishes (Cook & Lake Counties)
• 120 parishes with Hispanic congregations
• 40 parishes with Polish congregations
• 100 parishes have significant presence of Filipinos – they don’t have masses in Tagalog, but celebrate

Actions in the Country and the Church 2005-2007
• 80 dioceses involved
• 2005-2006 marches all over the country
• Presence in 180 Chicago parishes with 200+ story tellers
• Collected 200,000 postcards for elected officials
• Priests for Justice for Immigrants (200)
• Sisters & Brothers of Immigrants (59 orders)

Implementation – Pastoral Migratoria
• Survey: identify needs of parish community
• Informational tables after Masses: brochures, hand outs
• Workshops: on various topics i.e labor, immigration,
housing, health, parenting, domestic violence, etc.
• Professional services/resources: legal clinic, counseling
services, filling out income taxes, etc.

An average of 20 parishes provide weekly informational tables.
Health Fairs with medical screenings, referrals to health facilities, and information, are conducted in parishes in collaboration with
Catholic Charities. Pastoral Migratoria agents promote, provide logistics support the day of event.
Justice Actions 2013-14
• 50,000 postcards for drivers licenses collected in 36
parishes and delivered to state representatives
• 18 congressional visits organized/assisted by
pastoral agents and non-immigrants parishioners
• 100,000 printed postcards for immigration reform
collected from 150 parishes

Justice Actions 2013-14• 204 parishes and 18 religious orders participated in
congressional campaign
• 28 Pastors (including his pastor) from Congressman Lipinski’s district sent him a letter to support immigration reform
• 150 leaders from Pastoral Migratoria , Polish Immigrant to Immigrant Ministry, Immigration parish coordinators (non-immigrant parishes) and sisters held prayer vigils in tough Chicago winter and in May he announced his CHANGE OF HEART!
