Robin Hood, a skilled archer, lived in England during the reign of King Henry II. He was 18 years old when the Nottingham’s Sheriff announced a prize of a butt of ale to the best shooter. So, he left for Nottingham. On his way, he met some foresters. The foresters teased Robin Hood. This angered him and he killed one of them. Fearing that he might be arrested, Robin hid in a house at Greenwood. In that house, a number of outlaws had gathered. They formed a gang of outlaws. When the Sheriff came to know about the killing,

Little John gave a tough fight to Robin. Impressed with his bravery, Robin invited him to join his gang and he accepted. The Sheriff had issued an arrest warrant with a promise of reward for the one who would catch Robin. He had its copies distributed among the people. A tinker also got a copy and began to search for Robin. He met Robin but could not recognize him. Robin took him to an inn. There, he took away his money and the paper, when the tinker was fast asleep. When he woke up, he was told by the innkeeper that he was accompanied by Robin himself. He found Robin and fought him. Robin was impressed with him and made him join his gang. Next, the Sheriff planned to trap Robin by holding a shooting match at Nottingham. He announced that the winner would be given a golden arrow, believing that Robin would surely participate in it. He told his soldiers to be ready to catchhim.

On the day of the match, Robin appeared in tattered clothes and nobody recognized him. Robin emerged winner among other archers. The Sheriff awarded the prize to him and commented that he was a better shooter than Robin. While returning, he shot a scroll into the dining hall, where the Sheriff was sitting with his officers. The scroll read that the receiver of the prize was Robin himself. The Sheriff got irritated and sent his soldiers to capture him.

Robin, on the other hand, had joined his gang and decided to give the soldiers a befitting reply. Will Stutely was a stout member of Robin’s gang. He was asked to trace the Sheriff’s soldiers. Soon he found some of them drinking at the Blue Boar inn. Stutely sat in a distant bench with bowed head. Shortly after that, he had a fight with the soldiers and was taken captive. Robin Hood sent his men in groups to rescue him. Stutely was rescued by Robin Hood and his men.

For about a year, Robin Hood and his men remained within the Sherwood Forest and did not come to Nottinghamshire. One day, he saw a young butcher in a cart with mutton and beef hung on its sides. He disguised himself as a butcher and came to Nottingham. He spread the meat on the bench with a cleaver in his hand and sold his meat at the cheapest; all his meat was sold in no time. The Sheriff heard about it and came to meet Robin, who introduced himself as Robert o’ Locksley. Robert o’ Locksley said that he owned about five hundred horned beasts. Sheriff accompanied him to the Sherwood Forest. There, the Sheriff and Robert o’ Locksley were given a royal feast of venison and fat capons with wine, by the members of Robin’s band, also famous as Merry Men. After the dinner, the Sheriff departed.

At the Great Nottinghamshire Fair, the Sheriff announced an archery contest. A prize of two fat steers would be given to the best bowman. Little John, the trusted man of RobinHood, went to the fair. He was given the name “Reynolds Greenleaf” for disguise. He won the contest and the Sheriff was so impressed with John that he employed him. The Sheriff was about to go hunting, but Reynolds Greenleaf was missing; he was actually snoring in the bed. The Sheriff left without him. Later, Reynolds woke up hungry, but the steward, who was jealous of him, would not allow him into the kitchen. Reynolds got angry and knocked him flat on the floor and was motionless. The cook heard the sound of the blow and came there. He saw Reynolds Greenleaf feasting. The cook, who also liked to eat, joined him in feasting. After that, both of them drew their swords from their scabbards and got engaged into a duel. They fought until they were tired.
