Many composers have a preferred instrument they write with

For most it’s piano› Even for me, and I’m really bad at piano

If you don’t play an instrument, you can still use some guidelines to help you

Plan out a shape for your melody› Choose four points and let the notes move

in those directions› Even if you don’t know how it will sound,

you can have an idea ahead of time› Starting and ending on the tonic can

create cohesion› Let’s try writing with four points together

Melodic Contour

There are two main categories for melodies› Conjunct: Melodies where the notes are

close together and involve mostly steps› Disjunct: Melodies where the notes are far

apart and involve mostly leaps


Homework

Your assignment is to create three melodies: one using the four point method, one that is conjunct, and one that is disjunct. They will each be eight measures long. They must all begin and end on the tonic (C unless you choose otherwise).
