This is a three part document that explains the Opportunity in Education concept in simple terms.

Opportunity in Education is a truly global project. Many people from all over the world stick their heads together, are collaborating, connecting their minds,

brainstorming ideas and work very hard to make it happen...

Opportunity in Education ...is a global digital education project that will provide easy access and equal opportunity for anyone. We do this by the means of enhancing existing open source based e-Learning structures and establishing structures where they are missing. Our aim is to cross link and connect them around the world in order to create a powerful global e-learning environment that includes a central multilingual content hub that every user is invited to contribute to.

In theory I can practically do anything… I can become a medical doctor, a teacher,

an engineer or even fly to the moon…

Good education is the key for to become and achieve anything one desires and dreams about. For your personal benefit and for the benefit of the community you are living in.

Education is the remedy for many things in life: • Education promotes a healthier living • Education is the key for less poverty • Education is the engine for innovations • Education helps to protect the environment • Education promotes a peaceful world to live in Education is ones personal box of tricks that help to shape the world to become a better place.

Access and learning possibilities for anyone from anywhere and since "Opportunity in Education" is primarily based and built up on existing and well established Open Source learning management systems (LMS) it is open to the world wide community of Open Source developers. In turn this connects tens of thousands enthusiastic and brilliant e-Learning minds that are all able to contribute to the creation of one or many equal opportunity learning environments.

How does it all work? The "Opportunity in Education" project is designed to provide access for anyone to a highly effective, intuitive, fun to use and affordable learning environment that can be easily implemented anywhere in the world as a local, regional or cross linked e-Learning solution in order to form digital learning communities and ultimately a global e-Learning network. One of the key benefits and the corner stones of the "Opportunity in Education" learning environments are Open Source learning management systems (LMS) such as Moodle, Ilias, Chamilo, OpenOlat etc. Open Source software is generally very affordable and it can be used anywhere in the world. Open Source software is ideal for customization and one can expanded upon the software core easily - to teach the software new tricks so to speak.



Putting the theory of how it should work into practice to demonstrate that it does work!

We are using the „Kulturkiosk“ an international EU Erasmus+ Program sponsered school project as our demonstrator. 8 schools from 7 EU-countries participating and practicing a new didactical concept. This project is using an optimized Moodle based software. All of the 8 schools are accessing and working with that software at the same time. In order to allow other schools that are not part of the official „Kulturkiosk“ project to participate and/or to take the didactical concept on board a stand alone version of the project software was created. To network and to push and pull museum content via a content pool from the original „Kulturkiosk“ to any school using the stand alone version of the software (and vice versa) all software versions are hooked up to a custom content pool.



Any school or teaching institution using the optimized Moodle based Kulturkiosk software is able to create interactive museum guides just like the 8 schools from the 7 EU project countries. Each school or teaching institution can use the software as a stand alone version or connect to the original Kulturkiosk project or any of the stand alone versions.



The “Kulturkiosk” project is just one Moodle based example. Opportunity in Education is in general based on Open Standards and Open Source software that is freely available for anyone. The integration and customisations for Open Source software such as Moodle, Ilias, Chamilo, OpenOlat, Mahara and the like will be at the core of our project. Schools and teaching institutions can pick and chose which Open Source LMS the prefer to work with. One can learn with just one or many LMS at the same time.

For this we have a very clear vision and in fact a conceptual model that already takes shape and can be tested in early 2016. In the next page we draw a picture of how a personalised learning environment could look like and how it would function…


The long term vision for Opportunity in Education is to create a global learning environment that can be highly personalised and where the individual learner is the central focal point and not a particular piece of learning content or LMS.


Personalised Learning Environment

Content Activity or LMS

The individual profile of each learner is at the centre of an individual learning environment. The learner can - like in a sweet shop - „pick & mix“ content, OER learning nuggets and learning activities from a variety of LMS in order to create his/her learning experience. The learner is not caught in a particular and closed up system but rather creates his/her own open and highly personalised learning environment.

It is the learning environment that delivers indiscriminately and affordable education to every corner of the world.


Solutions for real life challenges…


Opportunity in Education integrates brilliant ideas, learning concepts and highly effective technology such as the Experience API (xAPI). The xAPI is the perfect tool for the secure and verifiable transport and storage of (i.e. learning) data. Opportunity in Education is enabled to record, store, analyse and re-use learning data as well as the verifiable electronic transfer of learning records, credits and achievements. Besides the convenience of a life long learning record and highly personal learning CV for each learner this technology has the potential to solve a very pressing and up-to-date problem - think about the millions of refugees and migrants the world experiences today. In most cases people have to leave their home/country with just the bare cloth they were wearing at the time. The new host countries are often lacking meaningful identification, certificates and qualifications in order to allow a smooth integration into society and work life. xAPI enabled Opportunity in Education learning profiles can remedy this problem with just one click on a button from anywhere in the world.


Access and Distribution The project will provide for testing and training purposes a fully fledged test environment. The Open Source software and the plugins needed can be downloaded from the official sites of each of the Open Source organisations directly. The project provides a directory with links of all resources including the links for custom APIs. The project resources are generally free of charge and free to use!
