Objective :

a) To explain what is Open Source Software is all about.b) To explain on Information Communication Technology

(ICT).

Open Source Software

Open Source Software

What is Open Source Software?

Open Source Software is something that can be modified, as this design is publicly accessible. A source code is a part of a software where most computer users could not see the code that computer programmers use to manipulate, improve, add and fix. The source code can be modified or enhanced by anyone with the knowledge. Example : Wikipedia website.

Example of Open Source Software

Advantages of Open Source Software

a) It’s generally free. b) It continually evolving in time as developers add to it and

modify it, which means it can be better quality and more secure and less prone to bugs than proprietary systems, because it has so many users poring over it and weeding out problems.

c) You can modify and adapt open source software for your own business requirements, something that is not possible with proprietary systems.

Disadvantages of Open Source Software

a) Although the open source software itself mostly free, there may still be some indirect costs involved, such as paying for external support.

b) Although having an open system means that there are many people identifying bugs and fixing them, it also means that malicious users can potentially view it and exploit any vulnerabilities.

c) There may also be less support available for when things go wrong – open source software tends to rely on its community of users to respond to and fix problems.

Characteristic of Open Source Software

a) Free Redistribution The license shall not require a royalty or other fee for such sale.

b) Source CodeThe program must include source code, and must allow distribution in source code as well as compiled form.

c) Derived WorksLicense must allow modifications and derived works.

Characteristic of Open Source Software

d) Integrity of The Author’s Source CodeThe license must explicitly permit distribution of software built from modified source code.

e) No Discrimination Against Persons or GroupsThe license must not discriminate against any person or group of persons.

f) No Discrimination Against Fields of EndeavorThe license must not restrict anyone from making use of the program in a specific field or endeavor.

Characteristic of Open Source Software

g) Distribution of LicenseThe rights attached to the program must apply to all to whom the program is redistributed.

h) License Must Not Be Specific to A ProductThe rights attached to the program must not depend on the program’s being part of a particular software distribution.

i) License Must Not Restrict Other Software and Must Be Technology-Neutral

The license must not place restrictions on other software that is distributed along with the licensed software and no provisions of the license may be predicted on any individual technology or style of interface,

Information Communication Technology (ICT)

Information Communication Technology (ICT)

What is ICT?

ICT or Information Communication Technology is a communication device or application that is used by many. The importance of ICT lies less in the technology itself than in its ability to create greater access to information and communication in underserved populations.

Examples of ICT

Effectiveness of ICT in Education

Can be use for both formal and non-formal classes because :a) Can be use anytime, anywhere.b) Can access to remote learning resources - no need to rely on

printed books and other materials.c) Help improve the quality of education - increasing learner

motivation and engagement by facilitating the acquisition of basic skills and enhancing teacher training.

d) Motivating students to learn.

Advantages of ICT

a) Easily access to any data sources and information rapidly.b) Many resources that can be use to help anyone in whatever

they need.c) Developed skills to work in collaboration and data processing

- Example : Google Drive.

Disadvantages of ICT

a) Pricey.b) Misuse of ICT.c) Plagiarism.d) Lack of experience, knowledge and understanding on using

ICT.e) Eroding someone’s privacy.f) ICT causes unemployment - Machine / Robots take over.

Conclusion

a) Everyone should use ICT more often and do not misuse it for any particular reasons.

b) Open Source Software is a software which you can edit from time to time as long as you have the proper source code.

THANK YOU! :)
