The final line is surprising because Mr. Johnson didn’t have veal cutlet for lunch. Additionally, Mr. Johnson has spent the day helping people. By lying, Mr. Johnson indicates that he has switched roles.
The following day Mr. and Mrs. Johnson will switch roles. Mr. Johnson will spend the day irritating people while Mrs. Johnson will help them.
