Collec3ve Intelligence and OER Toward a Collec3ve Intelligence Socio-‐Technical Infrastructure
Collec3ve Intelligence and OER Toward a Collec3ve Intelligence Socio-‐Technical Infrastructure
We are designing and developing a CI socio-‐technical infrastructure which aims at monitoring the collec3ve thinking, ac3on and interac3on around OER.
The CI-‐OER infrastructure will provide a view of the different angles from which we can look at and learn from an OER:
Such as in example its history, its design, its use, its future, its applica3on in educa3onal prac3ces by the prac33oners etc
RQ: How can we help researchers and prac//oners in the OER field to contribute to the evidences of OER effec/veness and to inves/gate these evidences collabora/vely?
Aims The OLnet site will have an OER page and from this page the socio-‐technical infrastructure will be able to point at different CI dimensions of that OER.
Moreover CI Widgets will be developed to enable founders, projects and communi3es in the OER movement to gather and explore CI around OER directly form their site.
OLnet project: The wider research ques3on
What CI dimensions?
SOCIAL: Who is behind this OER? what CI can we get from an OER if we ac3vate and exploit several social networking features around it. (SL) I.e providing answer to ques3ons such as: Who used this OER? Who needs this? Who commented to this? Who connected to this?
TOPICAL: What are the topics that this OER focus on? Why and how this OER is relevant for that topic? What Is the background knowledge it builds on, what are the issues and challenges it tackles?
DESIGN: Are there any paQerns behind the learning design of that OER? What are they? Are there beQer design that can be suggested (Design PaQerns)?
DIALOGICAL: What is the debate around this OER? Who is taking part of this debate, how can I explore the debate and how can I contribute to it?
What the Collec3ve Intelligence OER page and the OER Widgets will look
like?

The AUDIENCE widget shows general comments and the stories, evidences and experiences of the people who have interacted with this OER. Who need this? Who used this? Who liked this? Who authored this? Who commented to this? This widget revels who is behind this OER and how he/she interacted with it, i.e. by using, commen3ng, ra3ng, connec3ng or sugges3ng it

The Connec3ons network shows connec3ons between people’s generated contents around this OER. We enable people to tag, rate, comment, annotate, tell an experience or a story, start a topic discussion, and then we enable them to create seman3c connec3ons between these data. All these data is represented as a network graph and visualized in this area of the AUDIENCE widget.

The BACKSTAGE WIDGET tells you about the inside knowledge of this OER. It is about the contribu3on, the novelty, the problems and challenges and the design ,methods and paQerns eventually used in this OER. People (both the author of the OER or other users) can add (+ buQon) to these categories in two main ways: by adding new comments or by commen3ng other people ideas. Moreover users can also make seman3c connec3ons between content. Backstage Widget

The OER RECCOMENDATION WIDGET offers OER recommenda3ons, it suggests OERs that may be relevant to this OER: i.e. OERs to which other people connected, or OER tackling similar topics ( in this case by using some recommenda3ons engines from OER common , OER’s recommender etc)

Collabora3ve annota3on of OER The ANNNOTATE func3on enables user to make clips, to add comments to clips in the sidebar, connect and organize these notes and comments by using them to build knowledge maps. These maps can be used to remix and repurpose and connect contents taken from this OER or generated while reading and studying this OER with other external resources and insights. This func3on will be in the future eventually improved by adding tagging and mapping features to Cohere. .
How do we crowdsource input from the OER community?

The CI-‐OER infrastructure is mainly developed by improving and integra3ng Cohere with the Olnet site and with other Olnet tools.
Cohere is a Web tool to: collabora3vely annotate the web; create meaningful seman3c connec3ons between annota3ons and make sense of complex issues by exploring, filtering, deba3ng and beQer understanding other people’s thoughts. In this sense Cohere is a prototype to gather Contested Collec3ve intelligence (CCI) around OER since it builds on community thinking to make sense of the OER research world.
Development on the Cohere-‐Collec3ve Intelligence project can be followed at the OLnet site: hQp://olnet.org/node/102
Cohere is developed by the Knowledge Media Ins3tute, Open University, Milton Keynes, UK.
Hypermedia Discourse Project (Simon Buckingham Shum, Anna De Liddo, Michelle Bachler), in the context of the OLnet Project (HewleQ Founda3on). Try
