Preliminary Tasks

Page 7: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

The negative space in this image also allows this picture to have more life to it, the brick covered background and the graffiti included allows this picture to become more teenaged styled.

The slant the two people are stood on

this particular image allows the two

peoples heads to be level which allows this image to look

more stable and balanced.

The two people featured in this image are both standing around one square away from each other, this shows that this image is in order and stable with the grid.

Although the ground which they are stood on is not level, the way they are stood on other levels of each other allows there heads to become stable within the image.

Although the camera is focused on the two people featured in the picture, it also focuses on the negative space to allow this image to show some background and vibe to it.

Page 8: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

The person involved in this image is stood exactly down the middle on the image, this definitely allows this image to become balanced within the grid.

The negative space which is included in this image allows you to know where the image has been taken, there is a meaning for this negative space.

The object which the person featured in this image is stood on is fairly balanced, once you compare this to where to person is stood, you realise its quite a balanced image.

The main focus on this image is the person involved but as you look around the picture there are many things which have been focused on. The camera has not just focused on one particular thing, for example the object he is stood on and the negative space.

Page 9: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

This image is very level, the line on the table is exactly the same balance as the stairs which these two people sit on. This connotes a good piece of photography.

The two people involved are not balanced on these stairs which allows this image not be completely balanced with the table.

The negative space at the top of this particular image also allows this image to have a good background allows it to become more interesting.

The image is also focused towards the negative space and the scenery and not just the people featured in the image. This shows a lot of interesting aspects for this image.

The two peoples faces featured in this image are very serious and plain, this shows that this image is professional.

Page 10: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

There is not a lot of negative space in this image. This allows the viewer of the picture to look at the scenery of the college which is the main attraction.

The window in this image is not level or straight, this means the picture does not match the table. This shows the image is not balanced.

The main attraction in this image rises towards the negative space, which mean the negative space and the main attraction combine with each other.

The image is focusing on the scenery because that is the main attraction of the image. There is not a lot of negative space either which connotes people will automatically be attracted to the main part.

Page 11: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

The negative space in this image is very small, it also is right next to the main attraction in the image which attracts you to the interesting part in the picture.

The main attraction in this image, the Aquinas logo is slanted. This means that it does not match the way the table is set out and it is not balanced.

The building is fairly dull which compliments the sign, the dull background connotes that the sign is the main attraction and people should be interest in this aspect of the image.

The way this image is taken does not match the balance of the table, the edge of the building and the negative space in this image are horizontal which allows this image to not be balanced.

The main focus in the image is the Aquinas sign, the negative space and the building are quite blurred which allows the sign to be clear. This connotes the sign is the main attraction.

Page 12: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Negative space goes diagonal and straight across with the object on the screen, the negative space to does match the line.

The start of the object and then very end of it are both meeting on the same line which goes across the page, this allows this image to be a lot more balanced.

The very bottom of the gate to the top of it features with the horizontal line on the grid.

The object in the image is not well balanced which allows this image not to feature with the grid in some ways.

Page 13: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

The corridor in this image goes down the middle of the picture, this connotes that it is balanced and matches the table. This shows good photography and picture has been taken correctly.

There is not a lot of negative space in this image because there are a lot of interesting aspects in the image. This means the person who looks at this image will be entertained because there is a lot to focus on.

The person featured in the image is also in the middle of the picture which also allows this image to be balanced, this connotes good photography.

The main attraction in this image is unexpectedly at the top of the image and is not balanced, this means it does not manage the table and it not level. The camera is focused on this part of the image but also is focused on the corridor, there are a lot of interesting aspects to this image.

Page 14: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

This image is balanced. The objects in this image are level with the table which connotes this picture has been taken correctly to the table.

The roof on top of the main attraction is diagonal which means it is not balanced. This also means it is not on the correct level; to the table although the main attraction is, this connotes it is a hard picture to fully match to the table.

There is not a lot of negative space in this particular image. This connotes there is a lot to focus on for the person who is looking at it. The low amount of negative space also means that people will also be attracted to the main part of the image.

The windows and the roof are not completely level but the benches are, this connotes that the benches are the main focus of the image because they match the line which goes across the table.

Page 15: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

The crease where the two walls collide in the middle of the image. This shows the this image is balanced and it matches the level of the table and it has been take correctly. The way the two walls come together also connotes that it will attract the viewer of the picture to the middle of the page where the main attraction is placed.

There is hardly any negative space in this image which connotes there is a lot of interesting aspects in this image. The Negative space in the picture is also not level, this connotes that this image is not fully level. The low amount of negative space also connotes that it will attract the viewer to the main part of the image which is the scenery.

The camera is focused on the decorations, this connotes that it is the main part of the image. There is also not a lot of negative space which allows you to automatically look at the main attraction.

Page 16: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

The Aquinas sign in this image is not completely straight. This connotes that the image is not balanced and it doesn’t completely match the table.

The negative space in this image takes up quite a lot of this particular picture, this negative space is also not completely straight to the table which is a example of a bad taken photo.

The building is also has not been taken in a balanced way. It also has been taken from an awful way back from the building which allows the image to not feature the building in the best way possible.

Page 17: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

The facial expressions of the people featured in this picture are perfect and look professional.

The camera level in this image is not straight and there is not a lot of negative space for information to be featured in, this allows this image not to be suitable for a front cover image.

The way the lighting lights up the background of the people featured more than there faces also is not very relevant for a front cover image.

Rejected Contents Page Image

Page 18: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321
Page 19: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

I chose to make each page in my double page spread in columns of 3. By allowing these columns of 3 to be matched allows the pages to look alot more neater.

I matches the size of the images next to the text to allow the people which read this double page spread to know exactly which image matches with the text. It allows the page to look much more neater and easier to understand.

I constructed the text onto the image so it is slanting on the same level as the floor to make the text look like it is really there. This shows that the text belongs into the image.

The page numbers on the images which are featured all match to be in the same location and size on each image. The sizes of the page numbers are all big and bold so they are easier to understand.

The white bold background with the black bold text and columns allows the colours of the pages the match very correctly. The plain background with alot of text and images allows the page to look neater.

Page 22: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321
Page 23: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

This is a screen shot from when I just started to construct the contents page for my college magazine. You can see from the picture that I knew vaguely what I was going to do from the start of the construction of my contents page. You can also see how I changed my ideas in different slides of how I was going to make this contents page.

Page 24: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

This is a print screen of publisher from while I was in process of making my magazine contents page. The print screen shows I tried many different methods to try and correctly match how my magazine page should look like.

Page 25: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

This slide of my contents page shows the page when it is complete. From past slides you can see how I i went through many different methods to construct this contents page but started off with one main idea. I included other images onto the page to allow more aspects to come to the contents page. With less formal information.

Page 26: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

The character featured in this particular image is dressed in formal clothing, for example he is wearing a shirt and tie. The facial expressions do not match the way he is dressed because of the rebellious facial expression he is posing. This is to allow the facial expressions of the character to stand out a lot more.

The tie he is wearing in this particular image also allows the character to seem a lot more rebellious. For example the colour of the tie is red, white and black which connote danger when you look at this front cover. The tie is also loose the create a sense that he is careless and it also helps to show his silver chain.

His arm is tilted to the same level of the title on the right hand side, this also allows the reader to see his tattoos which also is rebellious.

His eyes are widened and pointed right at the camera to allow him to seem imitating.

Page 27: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

His shirt is low to allow the audience to see his tattoos in the image. This creates a rebellious vibe to the image which fits into the magazine genre.

The page number is anchored on the star with a matching quote from the star featured in the image. Allows the audience to be attracted to read this.

Text box is in line to allow the contents page to seem neater, the page numbers are not in order though to not allow the contents page and the magazine to seem repetitive.

His tattoos, facial expressions, eye contact, glasses and hair connote a rebellious vibe towards the contents page featured in the magazine. This also matches the magazines genre.

The characters eyes are in the same place a magazine title would usually be, this allows it to catch the audiences eye and draw us into reading this magazine.

The magazine includes a quote from the artist which includes information about himself, this allows only Kerrang readers to know this which allows the audience to feel involved.

Page 28: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

The characters face featured in this particular contents page allows it to seem rebellious, the amount of eye contact towards the camera also connotes that she is self confident which inspires people to read this.

They’re more than one in image in this contents page which allows the page to seem more interesting because of the more content which is featured on the page, more information and images will catch then audiences eye and allow them to become more interested in this particular contents page.

The page numbers and titles are on a white background which allow them to stand out a lot more, this allows the information to catch the viewers eyes and allows them to be more drawn towards the content page.

The contents title on the top left of the page matches the background of the main image on the page, this allows a colour scheme to be featured in the page which connotes it to seem neater.

The two images featured at the bottom of the page are both cut evenly to fit into place with the main image. This is to create a form of balance within the page structure and connotes that the page was smartly planned.

The two characters featured in the magazine both have blonde hair to match the yellow negative space of the image. This is to allow colour coding to be featured in this particular contents page.

The text featured on the left of the magazine is bright pink, this ,matches the particular outfits which the two models are wearing on the main image of the contents page. This also creates colour coding towards the page structure.

Page 29: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

This particular contents page has many images featured onto the page, this allows the page to seem filled with extra information which connotes that the audience will be more interested in it. Also is more chaotic which matches the genre of the magazine.

The person featured on the main image of the contents page is wearing a leather jacket and his facial expression is out of the ordinary, this connotes a rebellious vibe towards the contents page which fits into the genre of this particular magazine.

The text box on the right hand side of the page is red, white and blue which matches the Union Jack flag which is featured in the main image of the contents page, this allows a colour scheme to be featured into the contents page which allows it to seem neater.

The Union Jack flag featured in the main image creates a target audience towards the magazine and allows British Kerrang readers to feel a part of this magazine and the artist which is featured in the image.

The main title of the magazine is the same colour of the other titles featured on the contents page, this allows the colours to fit together on the page to allow the page to appear more neat.

Page 30: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

While constructing my Aquinas magazine contents page I had a vague idea of how I was going to construct it. I learnt that the students of Aquinas will want to also be familiarised with the college and that's why I added the college logo at the top of the page.

I added the best image to the page and allowed it to be the main feature on my Aquinas contents page because students will be interested in the best images and also the best content.

I added the two other images under the main image on the page because more content allows the page to be more interesting. By allowing the two image to crop right into the centre of the main image above it allows the page to look much neater.

The title at the top of the page on the left margin is in red. I learnt if something needs to stand out in my magazine, I have to edit it and add the right conventions to the text or image so it stands out well enough on the page for the audience that read this magazine to realise that these features are the most important.

By adding a margin to my contents page allowed me to realise I could add more colour and information to the page. For example by making my margin black allowed my white text to stand out much more and also the title at the top of the page. I also made the page number much bigger because I learnt by making these letters bigger, it will allow it to stand out much more to the audience.

Pre Magazine Pitch

Magazine Pitch Whilst in progress in making my magazine, I

would like aspects of myself to be featured into the magazine I will create. For example my sense of style will be featured into the way the characters featured in the magazine will dress, the magazine will feature undiscovered artists and bands which will now be discovered by the chosen audience who read this magazine. By allowing my audience to discover these artists through this magazine will allow them to tell their friends about which results in allowing this magazine to be popularized.

Page 35: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Pre Magazine Pitch

The chosen vibe of the magazine will be alternative and indie which matches with the artists and bands which are featured in the magazine. Since the magazine will appeal to teenagers, the content included into the magazine will also have a rebellious vibe to it which allows teenagers to get a rebellious thrill when reading my magazine.

Page 36: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Pre Magazine Pitch

There are many indie and new clothes brands arriving nowadays. In my magazine I will have the people featured to wear individual and new clothing brands to help my target audience discover new styles. Including clothing brands into my magazine allows the target audience to feel involved in the audience which read this magazine and also to allow them to pick up on new brands and styles.

Page 37: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Print screens for indie magazine

This image shows how I constructed the text so it balances on the stars shoulder that is featured in the front cover image. I vaguely knew i was going to construct my magazine cover like this from the start of making it. This print screen shows how i edited it allow it to be appealing to people that wuill buy this magazine.

By including this into every magazine, it will give my audience more reasons to buy this product and also for my magazine to be a base where people can find exclusive information on which they can tell there friends about which also creates more advertisement and promotion for my magazine. Every edition my magazine will hold a competition to allow my target audience to win tickets for the bands they love. This will allows my audience to feel more satisfied with the magazine they buy.

Question 2

Page 43: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Question 2 As my magazine advertises many clothing companies and these companies will be

advertised through my magazine. I will allow my magazine to be featured on each one of these clothing websites. For example small companies like “Hype” which is featured in my magazine started as a very small company but they then grow into global and world wide companies. Once these companies that are featured and are global. The power of advertising of my magazine being featured on these websites will allow my magazine to become much more popular globally. Radio stations will also allow my magazine to grow by allowing stars that have been featured in my magazine to mention how they became famous in interviews. This will allow people to become much more interested in my magazine.

Page 44: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Question 2By adding new stars to my magazine will allow my advertising of there new coming to music to be a main source of promotion for why they have became so popular. By allowing these stars to become famous through my magazine will allow them to mention this while they are being interviewed on popular TV shows and Radio shows. Page 45: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Question 3

Page 46: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Question 3

My magazine represents a particular social group by allowing content to be included into the magazine. By including content into the magazine allows the readers of this magazine to become on particular group. This social group my magazine readers will match with the key stereotypical teenager which inspires to be rebellious and an individual. By allowing key codes and conventions to my magazine which inspires young adults and teenagers to be like the stars which are featured in my magazine will allow my magazine to become a main talking point in stereotypical teenaged social groups conversations. Allowing teenagers to go out and discover new bands by going to gigs which they discovered through my magazine will allow me to target particular social groups by choosing the ones out which have a passion for music, once these individual thrill seekers have been picked out by the contents featured in my magazine. They will then discover new clothing brands which will allow them to come together and show resemblance together towards my magazine. My magazine will target the young and rebellious thrill seeker which desires to be an individual but my magazine will also form new social groups.

Page 47: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

While making my magazine I learnt that audiences and readers of different magazines want to feel a part of a social group a target audience and they want to feel like the magazine is talking directly to them. Whilst writing the contents and article for my double page spread I realised by talking directly at the audience will allow them to feel a part of something they can relate to and get guidance from. By allowing the audience to receive guidance through my magazine and allowing them to feel like they are a part of something will allow my audience members to become happy and welcome while they are reading my magazine. I learnt that when my readers spend there hard worked money on my magazine they will have to feel satisfied by the contents I put in it and therefore that is why I chose this style of writing to allow my audience to feel like they are escaping into another place when they read this, the place where they feel welcomed and a place which they can relate to. By learning about this place I needed to create which they can escape to. My social groups will then spread the word about the magazine I have made and young adults and teenagers which inspire to be rebellious and individual like the stars which are featured in the magazine. By allowing the stars to also talk about there fans allowing the audience to feel like there payback helps them also allowed me to learn that the fans of stars will become more interested in showing there gratitude towards the fans and they will become more attached to this magazine because they will desire to discover new interviews.

Page 48: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Question 4

Page 49: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Question 4Many existing magazines allow there magazine titles to be neat and tidy so many audiences can understand what it says and what it represents. They allow the title to be neat so someone may walk past this magazine and recognise it to be neat and not chaotic. My magazine title allows the reader to instantly know what genre the magazine is by the bold and chaotic text. By just looking at the text featured in the magazine will allow connotations to be featured in the readers mind straight away.

Many front covers from other magazines only display one main image to allow a more neater and professional approach to be made for there magazine. I have added other images onto the page to allow the audience to instantly know what is inside the magazine and to allow a more chaotic approach to made to it.

Usually many magazines allow the top third of the page to be taken up from one main title. In my magazine, I decided to add a sub heading to my title to allow my readers to realise what edition of my magazine this is and this is a one off special. Once my readers know that this edition of my magazine is special, they will start to understand why they should buy it.

By adding clothing onto the front cover of my magazine will also challenge codes and conventions of normal magazines. For example many magazines allow one images to be featured to allow it so seem more professional but I took a completely different approach. I added clothing from my fans favourite bands to allow them to realise what good content is inside.

Page 50: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

I decided to add a quote onto the double page spread of my magazine to allow readers to know exactly what my star has said straight away. This is different from normal codes and conventions because there is text resting on his shoulder and not in a formal text box as it usually should be. The text anchoring his shoulder also matches the quote which is featured on the front cover of my magazine.

Usual double page spreads are made in one colour format. By allowing one side of my page to feature one main image with bold text over it and the other page to be darker connotes that there is two sides to the star which is featured.

Many double page spreads allow one side of the page to only feature images and very little content and then the other side to feature content about the star featured. I have challenged many key codes and conventions by allowing images to be featured on both sides of the page which are separated by the article which is featured. This connotes that there is two sides to this star.

I have placed a title over the image of the star in the same style of writing as my front cover. This allows a form of a style to be made to my magazine. Many double page spreads separate text from images to allow it to become formal. I have mixed the two to allow it to become more chaotic.

Many magazine double page spreads have the same which background with white text to cover this. I have challenged this and made it the other way round. This allows the page to seem more gothic which matches with my magazine genre and it allows my text to become more bold.

Page 51: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Question 5

Page 52: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

My magazine includes a huge red front cover title which connotes a rebellious vibe. This matches the particular social group for my magazine.

The rebellious slogan included into the magazine connotes that he is the one person that can change things in the music business. This matches the individual social groups which this magazine is suitable for.

The clothing in the magazine which is featured on the front cover will allow new social groups to be made while they read my magazine by allowing the fans of my magazine to wear the same products will show a connotation of resemblance in my magazine. By allowing a large amount of people to discover clothing through my magazine will allow my product to be the main talking point in teenaged socialisation.

The rips and tears on the stars clothes on my magazine front cover shows a sign of a rebellion to the star which matches the social group of my magazine.

More clothing products from my audiences favourite bands will also create new social groups in my magazine by allowing them to discover the clothes they wear through the magazine they read.

By including tour dates into my magazine will allow my audience of the magazine to discover new bands and artists just by reading this chosen magazine article. My allowing the, to discover new bands by reading my magazine will allow it to be a topic of conversation in the social groups which read my magazine. By allowing my magazine to bring my chosen social group to have good nights with other people which read my magazine which will allow the talk of my magazine to spread to different social groups as they go out and talk to others about how they discovered this particular band or artist.

I included the phrase “HOT NEW CLOTHING BRANDS” at the top of the page to allow social groups to be formed by the fans of my magazine to wear the same clothes which they have discovered through my magazine. Once the fans of my magazine wear the same clothing products it will allow a key of representation to be matched to my magazine to the fans that read it.

Page 53: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Masthead on the front cover is at the very top of the page and takes up a third of the featured cover. The font is also in red to connote danger which suits the rebellious teenaged genre of the magazine.

The person featured on the cover of the magazine has rebellious expression on his face to show he is wild. He also has a black eye to connote he has just came out of a fight or a rough gig he has just played.

There is a featured quote to show the rebellious mind of the star which is featured. This shows that the new star is going to change the business and connotes he is different than every other star.

By featuring a competition into the magazine, it attracts people to buy the magazine. This also connotes that people will feel a part of the magazine when they win this shirt because of the magazine.

By featuring the phrase “ How new brands”. Allows the audience to want the new brands to stand out from the crowd. Once they buy these products they will feel a part of the magazine because the root of there styles have came from the magazine.

By featuring these tour dates it connotes that people will feel they are the first to know about these tour dates. This results in the readers having fun nights at gigs just because of what they read in the magazine.

By including the phrase “Halloween October Edition”. Allows the readers of this magazine to feel like this edition of the magazine is special which will allow them to feel more positive to buy the magazine.

By featuring new tee shirts from a viewers favourite band will allow the audience to automatically want to look inside to find out how to purchase it. This connotes more people will buy this magazine.

The white background allows the person featured to stand out more on magazine cover. This connotes that the star featured will catch the viewers eye a lot easier and will make them want to buy it.

Page 54: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Question 6.

Page 55: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

I wanted to match the magazine front cover title to the title featured in the contents page. I then copied the magazine title from the front to the contents page to connote that this from of text represents my magazine as an icon.

I chose to add the word “Inside” to anchor the main title and icon of the magazine to allow the audience to feel like they have emerged my magazine and it is exclusive to be looking inside it. I also chose darker and smaller text so it allows the title of the magazine to remain the main feature of the contents page.

I added a margin to the magazine to separate the pictures with a rebellious attitude away from the informal text. I decided to do this because the artist featured on the contents page has a rebellious lifestyle with also the formal features to match him with his lyric writing skills.

I also included the date of the magazine to allow the readers to remember this is a exclusive “Halloween October Edition” by including this to the contents page it allows the readers to know this magazine is different from the ordinary, just like the artist featured. The text is also the same the other piece of font which anchors the main title of the magazine. This allows the magazine title to remain the most important and allows the contents page to be more neat.

I featured a black background with white text to allow the background for my magazine contents page to be darker than most regular contents page. By making my background darker it allows my magazine to match the gothic and rock style genre I want my magazine to be fitted in.

By allowing my background of my contents page to be black, it allows my font featured on the right hand side of the page to be highlighted a lot more. By allowing my text to be highlighted allows it stand out more which allows the reader to become more interested in reading the text. As they read the text, they discover what is inside my magazine which allows them to desire to read it more.

The page numbers featured in the contents page I also a lot bigger than the other text in the black margin. This allows the most important piece of information to stand out in the margin and allows the reader to know exactly where to go to find what they are looking for.

I chosen to anchor the quote from the star on his shoulder. This shows a level of importance to the star and allows the reader to understand the quote has came directly from him. It also connotes he has the weight of the world resting on his shoulders.

The text at the bottom of the page to fit with the extra images featured on the contents page is also white to match the text featured on the black margin on the right hand side of the page. This allows the magazine to look a lot more neater and for the text to be highlighted to stand out.

I featured the sentence “AND MUCH MORE!” away from the page numbers and other information to allow it to stand out from the other information in the black margin. By adding the phrase “AND MUCH MORE!” allows the audience to feel there is more surprises after the contents page in my magazine.

By adding extra images to the contents page that the reader hasn’t seen before allows the reader to understand that more content is released as you get further into the magazine. This will want them to read more and get more into the contents inside the magazine.

Page 56: OCR Foundation Portfolio G321

Question 6By making these two pages in my magazine, it allowed me to learn about what attracts the audience and what I need to do and place onto my pages of my magazine to allow the audience to be more attracted to my magazine. I learnt that using bright colours allowed my audience to be more attracted and drawn in by my magazine which connotes that they will want to buy this. I also learnt that using colours that match my magazine genre will also allow my social groups and target audience to feel more welcome while reading my chosen magazine. When my readers read every single page they will become familiar with the style of my magazine and the people which are in chosen social groups that read this will feel welcomed by the colours and layouts which I have chose to use.

I also learnt that using bold backgrounds to match the content I put on the page allows the main features I've on the page to stand out much more. By allowing these contents to stand out more, it allows my social group and target audience to notice these features that have been constructed to stand out to catch the eye of the reader and want to read more into my magazine. By learning that this is what I need to do in my magazine to allow features to stand out. Will allow my audience to understand much more what my magazine is and what is inside it. This will allow the social groups of my magazine to grow and become more popular.
