What is an Annotated Bibliography?

A bibliography is a list of sources (books, web sites, periodicals, etc) one uses for researching a topic

An annotation is a summary/evaluation Thus an annotated bibliography includes a

summary/evaluation of each source that you research for your project

Page 15: Note taking and annotated bib

How to Create an Annotated Bib.

Summarize the main points of the source; similar to paraphrasing

Assess/evaluate the information: is the info useful? compare it to your other sources?

Reflect on how this source will fit in with your other sources and into your paper; how does it shape your argument?

Quote: Add quotes (with page #’s) that you want to use in the paragraphs of your essay

Page 16: Note taking and annotated bib

Paraphrasing Take someone’s words and rephrase into your own words.

• IF you do not paraphrase correctly, you are plagiarizing.

• Change all of the words.• Change the word order.• YOU MUST STILL CITE THE SOURCE. Even

though you have changed the information into your own words, it is still another person’s IDEA and you MUST give them credit.
