Background• First published in March 1952

• Started as a newspaper then changed to a magazine format in the 1980s

• Published by IPC

• Online magazine launched in 1996

• Current editor Mike Williams replaced Krissi Murison 25 June 2012

NME• NME usually reports on the pop and rock genres

• It has an informal style this is probably because its largest audience are teenagers

• Figures from 2012 show that about 23000 people read NME

• NME hold its own award ceremony

CoverNME generally use the rule of thirds to arrange their covers. Here you can see that the kickers and cover lines lie on the left third of the page while Alex and Miles take over the other two thirds.

The masthead is an iconic one that has been used with some variations since 1978. It usually sits at the top left corner making it easy to see when on shelves in shops.

NME usually has a banner across the top or a strip at the bottom and the barcode is almost always at the bottom right of the cover.

• Colour scheme featuring mainly red, black and yellow but does change sometimes to suit the colour in the cover photograph

Double Page Spread

• Often a large photograph of the artist with strips of text for a visually appealing layout

• With most the text on one side and often a small amount of information over the image

• The page is often divided into two sections with the image on one and text on another

• Pull quotes are usually the biggest piece of text on the page

Audience • Average age of NME readers is 24• The majority of readers are male with only 31% female• Fashion and music seem to be very important to NME

readers• 65% are ABC1

• A very graphic magazine involving a lot of photography and visual stimulation
