What makes a good communicator?
What would you like tochange about how you communicate?
Useful Presuppositions for Today’s Sharing Session About Questions
You cannot not communicate The map is not the territory. The words
we use are NOT the event or the item the represent.
The meaning of communication is the Response you get
There is no failure only feedback

Let’s Talk about Filters: Beliefs Finish the following three sentences:
Women drivers are …
My best quality is …
________ is something I can never do because ________
Now imagine you’re this guy… You believe you could never be faster
than Liu Xiang, but today you ran faster than ever before
Your girlfriend says: “wow, today you could beat
Liu Xiang!”
Do you believe her? Who would you believe? Who wouldn’t you believe?
Language (Words) Last month we talked about “Love”
which was a timely topic for February
Strategies Frames Rituals
Convenient ways to express complex ideas
The problem with language (words)
How many of you remember the “Meta-Model?”
Hint: Our topic in December was “Asking powerful questions.”
How many of you found it difficult to get your significant other to discuss their love strategy or frame last month?
Decisions (Generalizations) What is your best friends cell phone
number?
Opening a Door
Results
Adults: “The Door is Locked.”
Young Children: “This door is funny it opens on the wrong
side.”
Decisions are Communication? Decisions here are our mental short cuts,
like opening a door or finding our friend’s number
When we are told about something that is routine or familiar our brain processes it according to these generalizations or automatic decisions
Take a break – get desert…
Think about breakfast…
Internal Representations
Breakfast isn’t controversial…
Movie Discussion Have you ever watched the exact same
movie with a friend but had a very different reaction?
What was the movie? What were the reactions you and your
friend had? Why did you react that way? Why do
you think they reacted that way?
Internal Representations and Behaviors
1. Think about a time you were truly happy…
2. Smile and feel sad
3. Think about a person who you find to be truly annoying and dislike having to talk to them
Conclusion Based on our previous experiences we filter information
about the world around us
In psychology seeing the world around us and filtering it in our own way is called projection
(The map is not the territory, right?)
Because our perceptions define our reality we often reinforce that our perception is the “right” perception
The first step is to identify our filters then we can begin to modify or remove the ones that are not helpful for us
What about Step 1 & 4??? We will save these for later sessions
including:
Building rapport for networking “Mind reading” More of the meta-model (more powerful
questions) The Milton Model (conversational hypnosis
by being vague)
