Night Crawler, a 2014 production can be identified as a thriller just from its title. The title ‘Nightcrawler’ portrays to any audience that the film will also connote neo-noir conventions. The American neo-noir crime thriller can be identified as a potential romance just through the opening image from the website. Its bold colours and separation of the male and female suggest that something may be separating a relationship that may be destined for them.

Yellow, being the most obvious colour to see when you first look

at this image, also tells the audience what the most

important pieces of information are e.g. title, awards etc. The use

of the colour white for the text also creates a simple yet stylish

effect, not only does it look professional but the colour also

compliments the colour of the main actors shirt – Jake

Gyllenhaal. The boldness and size of the title also shows the heritage of the font type. By making it large we are able to tell that this is what

the reader should be attracted to from a first glance.

This establishing shot suggests the setting used for this film. The contrast lighting with the use of yellow, san serif font allow the key information to stand out. This includes again the actors name and title which again give us an idea what the film may be like. The wide angle shot of the urban setting also suggest that the film may be shot outside for the most part of it, which adds to the conventions of a potential thriller for an unknown audience. The enigma coding of all the numbers from this title screen also suggest the querky puzzle which might need to be solved in the film.

From the next image we get an idea of location identity from the anchorage used, this is clever as it puts the audience in the place of filming. The use of ‘BuzzFeed’ an online review site, which the audience would trust, is also used to great affect. A short review of the film, which uses alliteration, and plays on onomatopia makes the film exciting. Also, from this image we can see an observatory looking over the city, making it potentially an important land mark in the film. The website portrays this to be a key scene in the film as it’s the first time we see a review on the film too.
