NEWTON’S FIRST LAW OF MOTIONPHYSICS
Miss Nora Villanueva
Newton’s first law states…
• “A body will continue in a state of rest or in a straight line of uniform motion unless acted on by an external force.”
• This means that an object at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by a outside force.
• An object at rest will stay at rest, and an object in motion will stay in motion at constant velocity, unless acted upon by an unbalanced force.
“Law of inertia”
• Newton´s first law is known as the law of inertia.
• Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist changes in its velocity: whether in motion or motionless.
Example
• Once airborne, unless acted on by an unbalanced force (gravity and air – fluid friction), this ball would never stop!
• Unless acted upon by an unbalanced force, this golf ball would sit on the tee forever.
