Frogs and other

that water is not in

good condition. They

came and saw that

people hurt water. He

Klaipeda is a maritime city, so the question of

vital importance is water pollution. Our students have studied household

chemicals, detergents, and the damage they cause to the environment.

Results are surprised! Organized campaigns:

"Blue Stream" (saving fresh water) • "Save Nature"

(recycling household waste) "Plant a Tree"

(landscape of the city) "School Courtyard" (landscape of the

school courtyard) "Birdhouses" (meeting birds in

spring) "For Free" (environmentally-

friendly actions).

Creative contests:

• "Beauty of Native

Land"

• "Our Favorite Place"

• «Songs about

Nature"

• "What do we know

about the ecology of

Klaipeda?"

The staff of Dun Gorg Preca intends to develop and enhance TEACHING and LEARNING in a LOVING, CARING, CLEAN, S A F E a n d H E A L T H Y environment as well as to strive to develop the potential of every child. THE SCHOOL Our School is called Dun Gorg Preca Primary ‘C’ and is situated in Guze’ Pace Street, Hamrun. It has been named after the saint Dun Gorg Preca. The present building is more than eighty years old and the student population is 435. Our school uniform complete with school badge and our sports attire are very smart and attractive. There are very old documents, registers and papers shelved in the school archives, with the oldest register dating back to 1861. These old documents throw some light on the early attempts at education and school ing which became compulsory in 1946. At our school, once a year we hold ‘Prize Day’, when a great number of students are awarded book prizes either for their high marks in the examinations or for their qualities or talents.

Earth Day is very i mp o r t a n t f or t h e community of 67th Inclusive Primary School. Each year we take part in a set of whole day events to enhance local awareness of ecological problems and solutions. This spring we had an Eco March along the most common local paths. Students were dressed according ly to the ecosystem they chose – some classes were green, some blue with pictures of different endangered plants and animals attached to their clothes. Students were handing over leaflets to citizens informing about the action of col lecting waste electrical and electronic e q u i p m e n t ( W E E E ) conducted by our school.

Welsh, Italian and Portuguese students

and teachers participated, during the

month of November 2012, in Glan

Conwy in Euro School Links Trilateral

Meeting. Inês, Ana Inês, Guilherme e

Sérgio, during a week, shared a week

full of new experiences, cultural

exchanges, sports, art and language

classes in Isgol Glan Conwy.

Welsh students, teachers and parents

welcomed foreign students in their

homes for afternoon activities, meals

and prepared evening festivals at school

(Bingo, disco night) and school trips and

path walks around Snowdonia, Slates

Museum, and 'Gelert's Grave', following

the footpath along the banks of the

Glaslyn. According to legend, the stone

monument in the field marks the resting

place of 'Gelert', the faithful hound of

the medieval Welsh Prince Llewelyn the

Great.

We had also the opportunity to visit the

Middle School and to develop research

activities about our own region in the

computer laboratory.

In the gymnasium we learned how to

play school basketball and hockey.

Our students presented our Eco School

Box Quiz and the welsh students

corresponded with very good researches

on Portuguese language, traditions and

symbols. Portuguese Students also

presented a PowerPoint about their

families, our region and our country,

together with some items that they

collected for the Amazing Eco Box ,

offered to Ysgol Glen Conwy and to the

Italian school, together with our Eco

Mascot.

This year we have h a d s e r i o u s difficulties doing the activity "Bicycle Day" our high school. Although our students, in their m a i n l y r u r a l environment, use bicycles regularly; the works in the roads near our school would have obliged them to take a n o t h e r , m o r e dangerous route. Instead, it was decided to make a display photos in our school. So this year, we decided to get closer look at the everyday live of our students. We proposed that they each take a picture with their bikes, write a brief description of how and when they use the bikes, and finally, give a short speech that would defend the value of the their bikes. Their work was exhibited at the

December is a time when the III.

osnovna šola Celje organizes its

traditional Christmas Bazaar. It is

organized on a Saturday and just like

on any other school day the children

come to the school and prepare a

short programme for their parents

and set up their small »shops« on the

halls. The parents also come to

school that day along with many

other guests who are guests at our

bazaar. The bazaar itself is a

charitable event where we sell some

of our products we had created for

this purpose. We usually organize a

special »crafts« day in November

where we use recycled and other

materials to create Christmas cards,

holiday jam, small Christmas trees

and decoratins and many, many

more different things. We try and use

natural and recycled materials for

this to further develop the idea of our

Euro School Links project. The

money raised from the bazaar stays

at the school and is used for

financing some extra activities our

school offers and we help those of

our families who need our help the

most. This is to say, if there is a

school trip organized or a visit to a

museum, the families of those most

in need do not have to pay for these

activities.

As part of the Euro School Links Comenius Project our students got busy this year with their latest project – our own eco garden. We have had many different activities in the last two years that focused on ecology and sustainability among which are our recycling workshops, mobility week activities, eco products and more. But we wanted to have something more, something new and durable. Our colleague, Mrs. Katarina Kurnik, came up with the idea of using a small plot of land on the school's ground and turning it into a garden. A garden by and for the students. The idea caught on quickly because being situated in the town centre of Celje there are but few green surfaces at our disposal and the children like the idea of having something green in their vicinity even more due to that fact. And so it came to be that starting early May – because of an unusually long winter – children stared preparing their eco garden under the careful eye of Mrs. Kurnik.

Page 19: Newsletter 2014 euro school links f

Photo 4: The garden is slowly starting to take form. Just a few final touches needed still. What is the most important, however, is the fact that the idea of having an eco-garden found so much positive response we can safely say that the garden is here to stay and it will always be a testament to our Euro School Links Comenius project.
