Introduction

Location: New York is located in the south-west of North America, and it is

the city with more inhabitants of the namesake state.

Population: The city of New York has around 16 million residents.

Currency: As all the American States, New York uses the dollar ($) as

principal currency.

Famous buildings and places to visit: The Statue of Liberty, the Empire

State Building, Times Square, Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge…

History of New York

Early settlers and colonization: The area that is currently New York, was

occupied by various tribes such as the Manahattoes or the Canarsies,

among others. From 1635 to 1659, the Dutch tried, three times, to colonize

New York, but failed in all attempts due to the conflict between natives

and settlers. Finally in 1664, the English took the territory without fighting

and renamed it as New York in honor of the Duke of York.

New York’s role in the independence: New York City gained importance

as a trading port under the British Empire. During the war, the city

emerged as the scene of the major battle known as "The campaign of

New York and New Jersey". Finally, New York was named the capital of

the United States until 1790.

4th July: Independence Day

The Independence Day of the United States, is a national holiday which is

celebrated the 4th of July in the United States. This day marks the signing

of the Declaration of independence in 1776, in which the country

proclaimed its formal separation from the British Empire. During the day,

people go to different activities such as parades, plays, concerts, etc. This

day is above all celebrated in New York and Washington D. C.

The attacks of September 11, 2001, were a series of terrorist attacks

committed that day in the United States, leaving more than 3000 deaths

and around 6000 victims. As well as the destruction of the World Trade

Center that includes the Twin Towers. According to the official version of

the U.S. Government, were committed by members of the network of

jihadist Al Qaeda.

New York is one of the most important financial centers of the world, and

one of the most important cities, joining Washington, London, Singapore

or Hong Kong, among others.
