Choosing right technology

Choosing Right Technology

How to choose?

In all these available options, it is vital to choose which

technology suits your needs best. This decision is primarily based on the devices your targeted audience uses.

Some questions to ask before choosing a technology –

• Which devices will my target audience be using or should use?

• Will the courses run through a LMS? • How interactive do I want my courses to be? • Will my courses be textually informative or

should they be graphically appealing? • How much effort am I willing to invest in the course?• And some others...

The most important factors among these are the targeted devices to be supported and theEffort/Cost involved.

Based on these factors, we shall distinguish solutions as per their targeted devices and which technology should be chosen for the same in the next section.

Courses for Desktops/Tablets

When you include tablets among your

list of targeted devices alongside desktops, you can be sure to eliminate Flash as an available technology as one of the most common of tablets, i.e. iPad, doesn’t support it. The choice then falls into choosing between HTML5 and Rapid Development Tools (RDT).

Courses for Smartphones

If we are looking to target a wider audience and also want to include

Smartphones to your list of devices, then HTML5 and RDT are your two options as above for tablets. Another option is creating applications which are installed and run on the device.

When it comes to m-learning, the development involved is different from that of desktops and tablets. There are a number of limitations and issues regarding mobile devices to be taken under consideration. Limited storage and small screen size are 2 of the most prominent of them. Another issue is the OS version. For example, every version of Android provides some changes compared to its predecessor making it vital to decide beforehand which versions are to be targeted. There are a few tools available which create responsive courses which run on all types of devices including Smartphones by making themresponsive. However, these have very limited functionality and support very limited types of content.

Generally, new courses are created for running on mobile devices withlimited functionality as compared to their desktop/tablet versions. These make sure that all the importantcontent is made available in as little space and word count as possible. Also, animations and heavy graphics are used less or even completely avoided to prevent storage andbandwidth issues.

m-Learning courses are of two types:

– Application based– Browser based

Applications are usually hybrid to reduce development costs while browser based courses have the same basic fundamentals as desktop/tablet courses.

There are RDTs such as Captivate which enable easy publishing of courses for mobile devices.

Courses with Videos

Courses with

VideosSome prefer the use of only videos

for their targeted audiences. Such video courses basically consist of a video player which runs videos explaining the concepts involved. This video player can bedeveloped using Flash, we can use the HTML5 <video> element, or even have add videos inside RDTs.

Courses with SVG

Courses with SVGArtwork and Illustrations including logos used in books and websites get

jagged when resized. Resizing becomes essential when using them on mobile devices including Pads and Phones. To ensure that the original quality is retained during thisconversion, it is important to have them created in a vector art format like SVG. SVG is a format that is rendered by most popular browsers today.

Designers can also redraw these pictures and convert them into vector art and SVG.
