express possession

• Ma veste ou ta veste?•

There are a couple of ways to show possession in French. One way is to use a word like mon / maor ton / ta. But what if the item is not mine or yours? Then we need to say it belongs to someone else. In English, we show possession with an apostrophe, then s. Paul's, my dad's, etc. There is no apostrophe in French.

• In order to show possession in this way in French, we say it like this: C'est la veste de Paul. It's the coat of Paul.(It's Paul's coat.)

• There's a slight change if we are saying that more than one item belongs to someone:

• Ce sont les chaussettes de Paul.
