Dual enrollment is an arrangement with a college or university that allows eligible high school students to take college courses for credit
Benefits of dual enrollment include: Allows all students to earn college credit Lowers the overall cost for college

1- Karp, M. (2013). Dual Enrollment for College Completion: Policy Recommendations for Tennessee. Community College Research Center. Teachers College, Columbia University.
What is Dual Enrollment?
Maryland State Department of Education’s College Readiness and Completion Act of 2013 required school districts and local universities to increase their offerings to high school students in order to support college readiness.
School districts are required to pay a portion of tuition for qualifying 11th and 12th graders who are also enrolled in college courses.
So…what was the impact on PGCPS? What was our approach to this new requirement?
The catalyst for our focus on dual enrollment
PGCPS pays: Tuition for ALL students dually enrolled in qualified courses at any
Maryland state college or university for fall, spring, and/or summer sessions
Fees and textbooks for students who receive free and reduced meals.
Students receive dual high school and college credit for pre-approved courses Grades are weighted No developmental courses
Currently, no restriction on the number of courses that students can take to receive college credit
To support the new dual enrollment requirements, PGCPS is taking the following approach:
PGCPS’s approach to dual enrollment
Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
Enrolled in 11th or 12th grade
Meet college requirements on college admissions tests: SAT, ACT, Accuplacer
Minimum requirements may vary at each college
Students must receive principal, counselor, and parent approval of course selection
Criteria for dual enrollment students
PGCPS administers the Accuplacer college placement exam to each student meeting minimum qualificationsExam fee paid by PGCPSStudents test during the school day at their high schoolTest offered in Fall and Spring
PGCPS administers SAT to all 11th gradersExam fee paid by PGCPSStudents test during the school day at their high schoolTest offered in Spring

Our Internship Numbers by Year
Below are our total number of career academy students taking on internships over the next 4 years:
How are we doing it?
Traditional InternshipStudent certification requirements
Student interest
Etc.
Our strategy uses three types of internships for our career academy students.
Three Forms for Internships
Work Simulation Opportunity for
internship experience while remaining in your school
Team of students solving significant business or community problem
Job Shadow Rotation
Student interest
Partner interest strong but limited ability for traditional internship
Partner Engagement Builds the future workforce
Students serve as a 5-10 year talent strategy for partners
Investment at a very low cost to your business – have our students provide a solution for you!
Parent Engagement
Parent meetings to discuss internships (requirements, needs for support, and process for placement)
Engagement prior to internship process and follow up engagement after student interviews are complete
We have over 400 business partners interested in supporting our career academies. Our traditional internship model engages partners, parents and students in order to meet the internship requirements for our students.
Traditional Internship – Partner and Parent Engagement
Job shadow rotation is a 40-45 day opportunity for students
Provides students with the opportunity to explore a career that they are interested in, but may have stipulations on exposure.
For opportunities that have peak student interest and high partner interest, but limited ability to allow students access to perform a traditional internship role.

Design Thinking is a solution based problem solving approach that focuses on empathy for the problem context, creative generation of insights and solutions, and rationality for various solutions.
This innovative process method is one of the most utilized methods of problem solving for both business and worldwide issues. It's being used by numerous corporations, small boutique businesses, and non-profits around the world, such as Proctor & Gamble, Capital One, Rent the Runway, and The Clinton Global Initiative, to solve significant business and community problems.
Work Simulation –Cutting Edge Innovative Practices
PGCPS interning students placed in cross-functional teams and provided either a local county issue or a problem a business is encountering in the marketplace. The students are given tools to help them solve the problem, along with the design thinking process to utilize to create potential solutions.
