Objectives
• Discuss factors that influence the resident’s rest and sleep
• Identify sleep pattern changes that occur with the elderly
• Identify actions the NA may take to help the resident rest and sleep
Common Sleep Pattern Changes
• May take longer to go to sleep• May have irregular sleep
patterns• Less able to tolerate too little
sleep – sleep deprivation
• May need short naps during the day
Factors that Effect Rest and Sleep
• Illness• Nutrition• Exercise• Environment• Drugs and other substances• Lifestyle changes• Emotional problems• Pain
Promote Rest and Sleep
• Take care of physical needs– Thirst; Hunger; Bathroom; Pain
• Comfort– Comfortable in bed; wrinkle-free
linens; backrub; follow their routine
• Environmental comfort– Temperature; ventilation; noise;
lighting
