NAIROBI-BASIC FACTS

.Nairobi is the capital and biggest city of Kenya. Translated from Maasai, it means “place of cool waters”. Found in 1899 as a train depot today it has a population of about 2,143,254 people. It is the 13th largest city in Africa. It is a business and cultural center. The city has grown around it's Central Business District (CBD), one of the most important parts of the city. The city is bordered by a national, game-preserve park (as seen on the background photo). Football is the most popular sport in Nairobi, with the Nyayo National Stadium located closely to the CBD.

around the Uhuru Highway, Haille Selassie Avenue, Moi Avenue and University Way. It is the most important part of the city with the City Hall and Parliament Building. Because of the economic boom in the 1990's Nairobi's skyline is compared to those of many Asian and American cities. Most of the buildings are headquarters of international business companies.

PROBLEMS FACING NAIROBI'S CBD

All though it would seem that Nairobi's CBD is a great place where lots of people live many people actually move out from it to live in the Upper Hill part of town. This is caused by high prices for rent. People actually spend less money if they build a house instead of renting one. This also includes office spaces and a small amount of parking spaces for the citizens. Another problem, one that is very common in every city, is heavy traffic. The busiest streets include Moi Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue and Kirinyaga Avenue. Environmental problems are also an issue. Atmospheric, air and noise pollution, all caused by motor vehicles. While the CBD is very modern, various parts of the city outside of it are still falling behind the rapidly growing, modernistic CBD.

WHAT STEPS ARE TAKEN TO STOP THESE PROBLEMS?

First of all, city developers are planning to change some of the main streets within the CBD to one-way streets. More parking spaces are to be added on the sides of the less commonly used roads, while those on the main streets are going to be removed, which would make more space for driving cars. The Nairobi City Council is drawing up several plans to decentralize the CBD and move many businesses out to the surrounding districts, making the city less dependent on the CBD, which right now is the greatest contributor to Nairobi's economy. Public transport has been greatly improved over the past thirty years with more than 1,500 people using.
