When he next saw Metis he flattered her and put her at her ease. Then with Metis off gaurd Zeus suddenly opened his mouth and swallowed her. This was the end of Metis but, possibly the beginning of Zeus's wisdom.

After a time Zeus developed the mother of all headaches. He howled so loudly it could be heard throughout the earth. The other gods came to see what the problem was. Hermes realized what needed to be done and directed Hephaestus to take a wedge and split open Zeus's skull. Out of the skull sprang Athena, full grown and in a full set of armour. Due to her manor of birth she has dominion over all things of the intellect.

RHETORICS• The most important rhetorical device Camus

uses is part of style : the allegory. Allegory is a narrative characters stand for other people. It is carefully extended metaphor.in the case of THE MYTH OF SISYPHUS Camus tells us the classical myth ,giving us some of the details as they appear in Homer and other as they appear in the works of other classical writers. Then he gives us his version of what Sisyphus is doing in the myth ,hoping that will eventually see how Sisyphus’s situation is parallel to that of most people.

• In addition to his use of allegory,Camus is also at another classical form, the aphorism or pity statement. The aphorism is a saying that seems to contain wisdom partly because it resembles all the wise old saws that have been passed down through the ages ,such as “A penny saved is a penny earned”or “A setting hen never lays”.Camus uses such aphoristics lines as “there is no fate that cannot be surmounted by scorn “(para 6).”there is no sun without shadow”(para9).There is a folksy quality to these aphorisms ,but they also operate to make the entire tone of the passage seem wise $ thoughtful.

• One very interesting aspect of this selection is the mode of address Camus uses. He seems to have imagined a specific

• Kind of audience, And he goes about addressing it in a manner suggesting unusual intimacy. He begins sentences with “As you have grasped. . .” and “Again I fancy Sisyphus returning toward his rock,”and begins the final paragraph with “I leave Sisyphus at the foot of the mountain!” The result is that we have the impression that we have overheard a one-sided conversation, pleasant and intimate.
