What is It?Myositis ossificans is a painful calcification resulting from a poorly treated or severe

injury. This bony deposit into the soft tissues typically follows trauma that has to do with leakage of blood between fascial

sheets. It is usually a result from impact that causes

damage to the sheath that surrounds the bone, as well as to the muscle.

It often happens with sports injuries.

What happens? In injury occurs that leads to bleeding, most

often between fascial sheets. The blood gushes between layers of muscles, where it quickly clots, becoming thick and jelly-like. If the blood never breaks up and goes back into

the body, it scatters, leaving behind an iron/calcium thing that feels and looks like a

bone inside your muscle.Eventually the body realizes that it doesn’t

belong there, and it will begin to break down, but this will take months or years for this to

happen.

Symptoms and Signs•Restrictions of movement range•Pain in the muscle when you use it•A hard lump in the muscle

TreatmentsIn some cases, radiotherapy was used to try and cure it, and for some it worked, but for

others it worsened, causing hip diseases and surgeries.

In the beginning, the best treatment is to not cause additional trauma to the area by

resting, keeping it elevated, and immobilizing it as much as possible. However, motion

exercises usually proves to have satisfactory recovery. When the condition is really bad and greatly impairs joint motion and weakness of the muscle, surgery is necessary to remove it.

Effects On The Body

• It effects the muscular system, leaving the muscle weakened and difficult to move without injuring it more.

• It effects the skeletal system – The condition is sometimes in the tissue surrounding the joints and bones.

It doesn’t spread, but it will get worse if it’s not properly treated.

It also has to do with the circulatory system, because blood

is what is originally clotting, which causes everything to

happen after that.
